The What’s Next preview told us everything. “I can still remember how excited Olivia and Drew were setting us up,” Stephanie tells Malcolm. “They thought we were perfect for each other.”

The Winters Family Has Been Here Before
If there is one thing the Winters family knows, it is that the truth has a nasty habit of arriving decades too late.
Lily Winters grew up believing Neil Winters was her biological father. She built her identity, her sense of self, her understanding of where she came from on that foundation. And then Malcolm’s paternity was revealed, and the entire structure collapsed. Lily had to rebuild who she was from the ground up. The family had to absorb a truth that rearranged every relationship between them.
Malcolm Winters has never carried a small secret in his life. And the show is not bringing him back alongside the woman he was once set up with, the woman who thought they were made for each other, to reminisce over coffee. He fell for Claire Newman. He stepped into her life, into her family’s orbit, into spaces occupied by Newmans and Abbotts and Winters, and not once has anyone been able to explain why he felt so at ease in rooms full of people he supposedly has no connection to.

Devon Winters, who was adopted into this family and has fought for his place in it, has to absorb yet another seismic revelation about the people he loves. Nate Hastings, Malcolm’s adopted son, has to sit with the knowledge that a biological child existed this entire time and no one said a word.
The Winters family has always been held together by love fierce enough to survive its own secrets. But every family has a limit. Malcolm Winters is coming home with something heavy enough to test that limit, and Stephanie Simmons is walking in right behind him.
