Alright, Young and the Restless fans, let’s talk about something that’s been living rent-free in our heads! Next week’s teasers reveal that Kyle Abbott sends a message to ex-wife Summer Newman. Now look, we know these two share custody of Harrison, so communication between them isn’t exactly shocking. But the fact that this made it into the official teasers? That’s the show telling us to PAY ATTENTION.
Think about it. Kyle doesn’t text Summer about Harrison’s soccer schedule and have it become a plot point. The writers are planting seeds here, and we’re pretty sure those seeds are growing into a full-blown return storyline. Summer has been mentioned multiple times lately – Phyllis talked about Lucy spending Christmas with her in Milan, and now Kyle is sliding into her messages. The breadcrumbs are forming a TRAIL, people!

The Timing Could Not Be More Perfect
Let’s look at what’s happening in Genoa City right now. Kyle’s situationship with Claire is MESSY – they broke up after the Audra drama exploded, Claire hooked up with Holden in LA, but now she’s back in town and they shared a kiss at Thanksgiving. They’re teaming up to take down Audra, but romance? That’s still up in the air. Victor is launching attacks on Jabot. The Abbott family is in full crisis mode. And where is Summer Newman during all of this CHAOS?
We don’t think Milan is going to hold her attention much longer.
Y&R has a history of bringing characters home when their families need them most – and the Abbotts DEFINITELY need reinforcements right now. Summer may have left town, but she’s still Harrison’s mother. She’s still a Newman by blood and an Abbott by marriage history. When things get this messy, that’s exactly when exes show up to complicate everything even further!
Plus, Kyle’s romantic life is a disaster. The Claire situation is unresolved. If Young and the Restless wants to throw a wrench into that already complicated dynamic, bringing Summer Newman back would be the PERFECT way to do it.

The Million Dollar Casting Question
Now here’s where the speculation gets REALLY fun. If Summer does return to Genoa City, who plays her?
Option one is Allison Lanier. She took over the role and made it her own, giving us a Summer who was fiery, fashion-forward, and fiercely protective of Harrison. Lanier’s Summer Newman was the one who watched her marriage to Kyle fall apart, so there’s built-in history there. Bringing her back would provide continuity with the Claire storyline and all the drama that’s been brewing.
But option two? That’s where things get INTERESTING. Hunter King defined Summer for years and won multiple Emmys doing it. King’s portrayal had that perfect balance of vulnerability and bite that made fans fall in love with the character. A Hunter King return would be a massive statement from the show – the kind of splashy move that generates headlines and gets fans BUZZING.
Both actresses brought something special to Summer Newman. Lanier gave us ambition and edge. King gave us depth and heart. Either one walking back into Genoa City would be appointment television!
