There’s an old saying that absolute power corrupts absolutely, and never has it been truer than in the case of Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic) in ‘The Young and the Restless.’ He might believe he can puppeteer everyone’s actions, but he recently learned that’s not so. As much as he carries the illusion of being everyone’s charmer, some folks aren’t blinded by the façade.
Sly Nate thought he could outsmart everyone, even his kin, in the high-stakes world of Chancellor-Winters. His sneaky information leaks to Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) about their impending IPO shattered his ties with cousins Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) and Lily Winters (Christel Khalil). His treacherous act left them so devastated, particularly since he’s family, that they practically washed their hands off him ever since he started marching to the beat of Newman Media’s drum.
It took a surprise gathering for the new jazz lounge dedication at the Athletic Club to Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John), engineered by Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway), for the estranged relatives to cross paths. Nate attended out of respect for Neil, and despite the history, Devon and Lily tolerated his presence.
But with Lily moving into Devon’s penthouse right across from Nate’s apartment following Devon and Abby’s move to the Chancellor mansion, the plot thickens. Nate, ever the smooth talker, welcomed Lily with a wine bottle in tow, seemingly under the impression that their feud was water under the bridge.
The audacious presumption that all’s forgiven didn’t quite hit the mark with Lily. His self-serving choices and the pain he inflicted on her and Devon were still fresh in her mind.
Just because their living quarters are within an arm’s length doesn’t imply a return to rosier times. Lily isn’t fooled by Nate’s unchanged ways, seeing him for who he truly is, and letting him know as much.
In a vain attempt to defend his choice of aligning with Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle), Nate insists he feels remorse for hurting Elena Dawson (Brytni Sarpy), although he conveniently writes her off as collateral damage in his ascent to power.
Lily, however, isn’t buying what he’s selling and sees right through him. His transparent lack of change appears to wound his ego as he grapples with her refusal to accept his transformed self.
