Port Charles’s Mayor Can’t Catch a Break

Being the mayor of Port Charles has never been easy, but lately Laura Collins has been dealing with more drama than any elected official should have to handle. On Wednesday’s episode of General Hospital, something has Laura alarmed, and given everything she’s been juggling, it could be literally anything.

Let’s review Laura Collins’s current nightmare list, shall we? Sidwell has been making veiled threats about her grandson Ace, essentially holding her hostage through her family. She’s already sent Kevin and Ace to Dublin to keep the little boy safe, but that doesn’t mean Sidwell is done terrorizing her. The man wants helipads on the piers, and he’s made it clear that crossing him comes with consequences.

Then there’s the Anna situation. Anna Devane disappeared right before the mayoral debate, supposedly called away on WSB business. But Laura isn’t stupid. She knows something is off. Anna wouldn’t just vanish without a proper explanation, and Jack Brennan’s vague excuses aren’t cutting it. What Laura doesn’t know is that Anna is being held captive in Sidwell’s tunnels, and Director Cullum of the WSB is apparently in on whatever sinister scheme they’re cooking up.

Sidwell’s Grip Tightens

The thing about Sidwell is that he’s not your typical Port Charles villain. He’s methodical, patient, and terrifyingly connected. He has his son Marco dating Lucas, which gives him access to the hospital and potentially to Sonny’s orbit through Carly. He has Jordan working for him, though she’s secretly planning to take him down. He has Laura dancing to his tune through threats to her family. And he has Britt under his control, forcing her to work on some mysterious project that involves finishing Faison’s work.

Whatever has Laura alarmed on Wednesday, it’s probably connected to this web of manipulation Sidwell has been spinning. Maybe she’s learned something new about Anna’s disappearance. Maybe Sidwell has escalated his threats. Maybe she’s discovered that the WSB isn’t as trustworthy as she thought, especially with Cullum apparently working against Anna instead of protecting her.

Laura Collins is a survivor. She’s faced down the Cassadines, the mob, and countless other threats over the years. But Sidwell might be different. He’s not motivated by passion or revenge like most Port Charles villains. He’s motivated by something colder, something more calculated. And that makes him infinitely more dangerous.

Wednesday’s Other Drama

While Laura is dealing with whatever has her alarmed, the rest of Port Charles is busy with their own messes. Tracy makes Jason an unexpected offer, and we’re dying to know what the Quartermaine matriarch is proposing. Tracy and Jason have always had a complicated relationship, so whatever she’s suggesting is bound to be interesting.

Nina offers guidance to Kai, which is either going to be helpful or disastrous depending on which version of Nina shows up. Agent Joss reports for duty and gets briefed by Brennan, suggesting her WSB training is moving forward despite all the chaos at the agency. And Lucas has to deliver very bad news to someone, which is never a pleasant task for a doctor.

The real question is whether Laura’s alarm is connected to the larger Sidwell conspiracy or if it’s something new entirely. Port Charles has no shortage of threats, and Laura Collins is standing at the center of all of them trying to hold her city together. One wrong move and everything could come crashing down around her.

At least she doesn’t have to deal with Victor Cassadine anymore. Small mercies, right?
