Brennan comes at this from the other end entirely. He is only breathing because Nina found him unconscious on July 1 and worked on his chest until he came back, then hid him under a false name while Cullum went on believing he was dead. Men like Brennan do not forget a debt like that, and they do not repay it in flowers. On July 9, Willow and Nina Reeves learned that the evidence Brennan was holding over Drew never burned. It went into a black box, Cullum stole that box before he died, and Brennan believes the thing may still be sitting somewhere on Spoon Island. That island has been a graveyard of secrets all summer. Now it holds the one item that decides whether Drew ever walks out of that room.

The chilling part was Brennan’s suggestion in the same conversation. He floated the simplest solution out loud, which is that Willow could just kill Drew and end the problem permanently. Willow said no. Read that again, because when Willow Cain is the one applying the brakes, the man beside her is the dangerous one. And Nina Reeves is now signing on to hunt with him.
