First Blood

Ava Jerome doesn’t do house calls out of the goodness of her heart, and Brook Lynn Quartermaine should know that better than anyone. When she showed up with a baby gift for Phoebe, it was never really about the gift.

Brook Lynn saw through the act fast, accusing Ava of playing go-between and brokering some kind of payoff. Ava insisted her only role had been connecting Alexis to a gallery where Delilah once worked, nothing more. Brook Lynn kept pushing anyway, wanting to know if Ava had tracked down Phoebe’s biological father while she was in New York City.

The Answer That Wasn’t a Lie

Ava didn’t flinch. She told Brook Lynn she didn’t know who Phoebe’s father was, and encouraged her not to go looking for problems that weren’t there. Technically, that’s true. Ava Jerome doesn’t know who fathered Phoebe. What she does know, and isn’t saying, is that it isn’t Ethan.

A Promise Worth Protecting

That confession slipped out of Ethan Lovett while he was bleeding out from a gunshot wound, and Ava has been sitting on it ever since. Ethan made a promise to Delilah to protect Phoebe by claiming a role that was never his, and Ava threatened to blow the whole thing up before ultimately deciding to keep his secret, for now.

This isn’t the first time Ava has quietly kept a secret that worked in her favor. She’s the same woman who let Valentin talk her into messing with Sonny’s medication and who thought Sidwell deserved to be handled permanently instead of hauled in for prosecution. Mercy has never really been her thing.

A Family Standing on Cracked Ground

The timing could not be worse for a secret like this to be sitting in Ava Jerome’s back pocket. The adoption paperwork has already been certified, and Chase and Brook Lynn fought their way back to solid ground after the Willow frame-up fallout nearly split their marriage apart. Neither of them has any idea the ground back in Port Charles is still shifting underneath them.

Brook Lynn’s instincts were right, even if she couldn’t prove it. She knows Ava is hiding something. She doesn’t know what, or how close it is to blowing up the family she’s fighting so hard to protect.

Two Secrets, One Marriage

Brook Lynn already has one secret of her own working against that same marriage, the truth about being the other driver the night Curtis and Jordan crashed. Stack Ava’s secret on top of that, and the “no lies, no secrets” promise Chase and Brook Lynn made each other is already broken twice over. Neither of them has caught on yet.

Powder Keg With Ava’s Name on It

Ava has never been the type to sit on a secret out of kindness. She protects people when it serves her, and she torches them when it doesn’t. If Ethan ever crosses her, or if the wrong person starts asking the right questions, Ava could easily become the reason Brook Lynn and Chase lose Phoebe altogether.

For now, Ava is playing peacemaker, patting Brook Lynn’s hand and telling her to trust the process. But peacemaking has never been a permanent state for her. The second it stops benefiting her, or the second Ethan gives her a reason to stop protecting him, that carefully kept secret could slip out in the worst possible way, in front of the wrong person, at the worst possible moment.
