Maurice Benard Teases Sonny’s Post-Mob Future on General Hospital Is “Absolutely Beautiful”
Maurice Benard says Sonny’s future on General Hospital is “absolutely beautiful” now that he’s officially left the mob behind for good.
MAURICE BENARD SAYS THE SONNY STORY AHEAD IS “ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL”
Sonny Corinthos walked away from the mob this week, and the man who has played him for over three decades says fans have nothing to fear. Maurice Benard is teasing what’s next for General Hospital’s most powerful man, and it sounds like a total game-changer.
Benard Answers the Fear Head-On for GH
Sonny Corinthos is out of the mob, and Maurice Benard wants fans to know that’s not a downgrade. The actor, who has played Sonny on General Hospital since 1993, responded on X after a fan argued that stripping Sonny and Jason Morgan’s mob ties out of the show would leave it feeling like “an ordinary boring soap.” Benard’s answer left no room for debate.
“There’s nothing wrong with doing another profession or change as long as both characters still have power,” he wrote. “And that is the plan.”
He didn’t stop there, either. “I can tell you right now what they have planned in the future is absolutely beautiful,” Maurice Benard added.

And that is the plan
I can tell you right now what they have planned in the future is absolutely beautiful
Fans online have been dissecting every word of that response since it went up, trying to guess exactly what “beautiful” could mean for two characters who have spent decades defined by danger, power struggles, and life on the wrong side of the law.

What “Beautiful” Could Actually Mean
Benard has played Sonny Corinthos for more than three decades and has earned three Daytime Emmys for the role, so a comment like that carries weight. He didn’t offer a single plot detail beyond those two words, and fans have spent the days since combing through every possible angle: a legitimate business empire, a new kind of power struggle that has nothing to do with turf wars, or something entirely unexpected that hasn’t crossed anyone’s radar yet.
What Benard did make clear is the one thing fans were actually worried about. Losing the mob does not mean losing Sonny’s influence in Port Charles. If anything, Benard’s comment suggests the writers are using this shift to open doors that three decades of organized crime storylines never could.
A Reinvention Fans Didn’t See Coming
It is a notable moment for a character who has spent the better part of 30 years defined by danger, loyalty, and life on the wrong side of the law. Sonny surviving, adapting, and staying every bit as powerful without the criminal empire attached to his name would mark one of the biggest reinventions the character has ever gone through, and Maurice Benard’s confidence about it has fans more excited than nervous.
The response also speaks to something fans of the show already know well: Benard doesn’t tend to hype up storylines he isn’t genuinely proud of. His track record of engaging honestly with viewers, even when he can’t reveal specifics, is part of why a single line like “absolutely beautiful” was enough to shift the conversation from worry to anticipation almost overnight.
For now, exactly what’s ahead for Sonny remains under wraps. But between Maurice Benard’s track record and his willingness to reassure fans directly, there’s plenty of reason to believe Port Charles’s most powerful man is headed somewhere worth watching.

I’m definitely with MB on this subject. I don’t feel Sonny nor Jason will loose what viewers have been enjoying 20+ years for some. I envision the change as being more entertaining and viewers should just wait and see before expressing so much noise that change will down grade the character’s personas. I am patiently waiting to see what changes will be made and if MB can go along with the program, I feel viewers should at least give things a chance to be revealed before complaints.
