Reading between the lines, this diagnosis is a lever. If Joy needs long-term care, Alex has a reason to stay close that no one can call selfish. If she recovers fast, the message boards will ask whether she milked the fear. Either way Stephanie loses ground, and Chad is right there.

My gut tells me the writers are shielding Joy Wesley from the villain label by making her sick, at least for now. Every day Alex spends at that bedside is a day Stephanie spends deciding whether she married a father or a husband.
