BREAKING GH NEWS! Genie Francis Will Receive Daytime’s Highest Honor at the 2026 Emmys
GH’s Genie Francis is being honored with daytime television’s top prize at the 2026 Emmys, capping nearly five decades in Port Charles.
GENIE FRANCIS ADDS DAYTIME’S ULTIMATE HONOR TO AN ALREADY LEGENDARY CAREER
Genie Francis is adding the Daytime Emmys’ biggest prize to a resume nearly 50 years in the making, and the timing could not be more perfect.
Genie Francis to Receive the Lifetime Achievement Award
Genie Francisย has spent nearly fifty years buildingย Laura Collinsย into one of daytime’s most enduring characters, and now the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is handing her its biggest prize for it. Francis will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Daytime Emmys, set to air October 30 from Hollywood, California. The timing lines up almost perfectly with another milestone.
Come February, Francis will mark 50 years since her very first episode as Laura aired on February 8, 1977, when she was only 14 years old stepping onto aย General Hospitalsoundstage for the first time. All these decades later, Laura currently serves as the mayor of Port Charles, still very much in the thick of the story.
Francis released a statement thanking NATAS for the honor, saying stepping onto that set as a teenager, she could never have imagined the journey that lay ahead. She added that she’s grateful for five decades of being welcomed into fans’ homes, and called her daytime career the adventure of a lifetime. NATAS President and CEO Adam Sharp praised her as leaving an indelible mark on the genre, noting she still tackles bold storylines as a courageous performer to this day.

A Career Nearly Five Decades in the Making
Laura’s love story with Luke Spencer, played by the late Anthony Geary, remains one of the most talked-about romances in the genre’s history. Their 1981 wedding pulled in an estimated 30 million viewers, a number that still gets cited whenever people talk about daytime’s biggest cultural moments. Francis stepped away from Port Charles in 1982 at the height of that fame, but she never stayed gone for long, popping back in for visits throughout the 80s before returning full-time in 1993 and playing Laura clear through 2002.
She’s reprised the role multiple times since, including runs in 2006 and 2008 that earned her a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2007, her only competitive win in a career full of nominations. Francis has also stepped outside Port Charles more than once, playing Diana Colville on Days of Our Lives from 1987 to 1989, Ceara Connor on All My Children from 1990 to 1992, and Genevieve Atkinson on The Young and the Restless from 2011 to 2012.
Her career has also stretched well beyond daytime, with credits including the miniseries North and South, guest spots on Murder, She Wrote and 3rd Rock from the Sun, and stage work off-Broadway. Away from set, Francis has been married to Jonathan Frakes, best known as Commander Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation, for nearly 40 years, and the couple share two adult children together.
A Big Night Ahead for Daytime
Francis’s honor comes as the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards gear up to be a big one across the board. This year’s ceremony will be a single event produced by NATAS Productions, with Adam Sharp and Lara Gates serving as executive producers and Leon Knoles returning to direct for a fifth consecutive year. Tickets go on sale September 9, and the show will stream live for anyone who wants to watch Francis take her moment in the spotlight.
