Beyond the Gates Spoilers October 1: Jacob Hawthorne’s Evidence Meets Devastating Family Resistance

The Toughest Room Jacob Walks Into Is His Own Family

Jacob Hawthorne has sat across from killers, con artists and a woman with poison in her bra. Thursday, he faces a harder crowd. The Beyond the Gates spoilers October 1 lineup says Jacob’s evidence “is met with familial resistance,” and the day’s preview adds that his family “isn’t keen to accept the evidence with which he presents them.”

The same episode puts Martin Richardson‘s re-election in jeopardy. CBS hasn’t connected the two, and nobody has said which case Jacob is carrying. But he is the detective on two investigations right now, and both of them run through his own family. Pick either one and Thursday gets messy.

Start with Bradley “Smitty” Smith, the journalist married to Martin. On September 17, Jacob questioned him over Uptown security footage that seems to show Max handing Smitty a purple pouch, a match for the pouch found in Lia’s jail cell. Smitty swears the footage was altered and that The Impaler is setting him up. He has not been charged, and this week he was worried that Jacob was avoiding him.

His Wife Sits on the Other Side of the Table

Here’s where “familial” starts to sting. The lawyer at Smitty’s side when Jacob questioned him was Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne, Jacob’s wife. She stepped in as Smitty’s attorney on September 8 and was back beside him on September 17, squarely across from her husband. CBS’s own fall preview warned that Smitty’s “devastating public blow” puts Naomi and Jacob “on opposing sides.”

Jacob Hawthorne’s parents haven’t made it easier either. On September 9, his father, Elon Hawthorne, a senior officer, questioned how Jacob was handling the case, Naomi’s role included. Days later, his mother, Darlene Hawthorne, urged him to put his marriage ahead of the job. And it was Elon who brought him the footage in the first place.

Now the other case. On September 24, Jacob arrested Hayley Lawson for attempted murder after the vial she was caught with tested positive for ethylene glycol. Her husband, Bill Hamilton, is Naomi’s father, which makes him Jacob’s father-in-law. Bill refused to believe the poison result, and now he’s arranging to drop the charges against Hayley. On Wednesday, his decision stuns his family.

What Evidence Does Jacob Hawthorne Have on Beyond the Gates?

The show hasn’t revealed what Jacob presents on Thursday, or which relative balks. What’s on the record is the Uptown footage in the Smitty case and the positive poison test in the Hayley case. If it’s Smitty, the pushback likely runs through Naomi and Martin’s corner. If it’s Hayley, it runs through Bill, who has every reason to want this case gone.

Here’s what most coverage skips. Jacob Hawthorne is the only man in Fairmont Crest with family on the other side of both cases. His wife is defending one suspect, and his father-in-law is shielding the other. And on Friday, Bill comes clean to Elon, Jacob’s own father.

Martin’s Campaign Is Running Out of Road

Martin has been dreading this for weeks. On September 14, he worried that the investigation into his husband could damage his re-election. On September 24, he told his father, Dr. Ted Richardson, that he still feared Smitty’s link to Lia’s case could end his career. Add Hayley’s recordings about Martin’s past, and it’s no surprise we flagged the threat to Martin’s re-election heading into this week. The election is just over a month away.

Elsewhere Thursday, Dani Dupree does her best to bolster Bill. Chelsea Hamilton takes out her frustrations on her fiancee, Dr. Madison Montgomery. Hayley has a face-off with Caroline, Bill’s assistant, and Kat Richardson and Tomas Navarro find common ground in a common enemy.

My Money Says the Public Blow Is Coming

My gut tells me Jacob Hawthorne’s evidence and Martin’s jeopardy land on the same day for a reason. CBS promised Smitty a devastating public blow, and it hasn’t landed yet. If I know these writers, a detective whose family won’t hear him out is exactly how a private mess turns public.

Don’t be surprised if the resistance is the point. Families in Fairmont Crest protect their own first and ask questions later. Jacob is about to learn which side of that line he’s standing on.
