Tyrell Brings Home a Bombshell

This Beyond the Gates Recap opens at Martin Richardson and Smitty‘s home, where the ongoing mess surrounding Liagets officially benched for the day. Martin steers the conversation toward Homecoming and Tyrell, and he positively glows describing a relative who walked the halls of Banneker when the Ivies weren’t opening their doors to Black students. His pride in watching their son follow that path is almost enough to make everyone forget the other forty-seven crises currently on the table.

Tyrell Richardson soon strolls in lugging a laundry bag and an air of newfound sophistication, and his dads wrap him in hugs. Samantha Richardson-Smith materializes for a hug of her own and observes that he looks different. His parents decline to wash his clothes, so Samantha volunteers for the job, and the siblings head off, leaving two very smug dads behind.

Fast-forward to the Duprees’ place, where Nicole Dupree Richardson, Shanice Johnson, Ted Richardson and Dr. Kial Rollins are swapping HBCU pride stories and the Homecoming warm-up is in full swing. Tyrell looks sharp, and he credits a girlfriend who apparently handles his entire wardrobe. When he heads off to fetch her, he stops short and hugs Deanna McBride instead, and the whole room collectively decides the mystery is solved. Tyrell and Deanna hurry to clarify that they’re only friends, which is exactly the kind of misread that earns a person a heavy dose of side-eye at a family gathering.

The real girlfriend turns out to be Chessie, Anastasia‘s granddaughter, and everyone gasps in unison. Samantha begs her brother to be joking, because Chessie is the reason Cottilan turned into a nightmare for her, and Samantha has clearly not recovered. Anita Dupree steps between the two before it becomes a spectator sport, while Dani Dupreecalmly munches popcorn like she’s watching a season finale, which, to be fair, she is.

Anita herds everyone into photos, with the Dupree women lined up and Andre Richardson behind the camera, and then Vernon Dupree delivers a speech about legacy and tradition and how college makes a person stronger. He’s proud of Tyrell, and Anita is too, despite never having attended Banneker herself, which is the sort of detail that deserves a footnote. Tyrell hopes to make everyone proud, and the family hoists their drinks and cheers for BU at a volume that’s remarkable for people who were glaring at each other five minutes earlier.

Later, Tyrell leans in to steal a kiss from Chessie, and she pulls back so nobody sees, a mixed signal at a party where everyone already knows she’s his girlfriend. When the pair plot an escape toward the studio, Dani, who knows a thing or two about covert operations after her recent adventure, intercepts them and orders them back to the party. Eventually everybody boards the Banneker-bound bus, belting songs and giggling, a surprisingly cheerful ending for a gathering with more tension than a playoff game.

Beyond the Gates Spoilers (BTG Spoilers), Beyond the Gates Recap (BTG Recap) Hayley Lawson Confronted by Bill Hamilton
Beyond the Gates Recap (BTG Recap) Hayley Lawson

Hayley’s Recordings Haunt the Homecoming

While the party hums along, a much less festive conversation unfolds in the casino’s back room, where Bill Hamiltontells Joey Armstrong that trouble has arrived. Hayley Lawson is aware of the incident on a country road that the two buried long ago, and she has audio of the whole thing. Bill describes the steps he took to keep her quiet. Joey, tense from the start, is furious anyway, and later barks into a phone that he wants results and has no interest in excuses.

After hanging up, he assures Bill he isn’t angry with him, because he understands exactly how it feels when a woman you shouldn’t have trusted turns on you. He announces he plans to give Hayley precisely what she’s after, which, judging by his next line, does not involve a gift basket. Joey asks if Bill has any dirt on her, and Bill suggests Randy Parker does. Randy conveniently materializes, and Bill squares up to him over Hayley, but Randy insists there’s no affair and claims he only crossed paths with her during her miscarriage. Bill points out she was never pregnant. Randy shrugs and plays dumb. Once Bill steps out, Joey berates Randy, who tries on an innocent expression, and then pronounces Hayley as good as dead, which is the kind of performance review nobody wants.

Over at the Duprees’ place, Vernon quietly fills Anita in that Hayley is blackmailing Bill over the Kenny cover-up. Anita is stunned and calls the men her daughters married foolish, a conclusion nobody at the party is brave enough to challenge. Vernon swears he won’t allow Hayley to harm the people they cherish. Elon Hawthorne fears his job and his marriage won’t survive exposure, and Vernon insists it won’t get that far. Earlier, Vernon scolds Chelsea Hamilton for blabbing about family business, then hugs her because the truth would have leaked eventually, and Anita arrives on cue to ask what news. Izaiah Hawthorne, meanwhile, apologizes to Chelsea for being the one who tattled to Vernon.

When Martin interrupts a huddle between Joey and Bill, they fib that the topic is Leslie Thomas and her house, and later Vernon says he’ll personally handle matters if they escalate. At this point the Duprees’ secrets have more recordings than a record label, and exactly zero of them are catchy.

Martin Squares Up to Jacob

Over coffee, Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne and Jacob Hawthorne discuss Smitty and the death of Lia, and since they stand on opposite sides of that question, Jacob suggests they shelve the topic for the day. Naomi admits she’s looking forward to the Jungle Juice, which is a very specific way to cope with a husband who’s investigating her cousin’s husband, and the two share a kiss.

At the Duprees’ place, Martin and Smitty eye Jacob with narrowed gazes, and the vibe sits somewhere between warm welcome and polite warning. Eventually Martin gets in Jacob’s face, and Naomi and Smitty scramble to calm him down. Jacob storms out, Naomi, irritated, trails after him, and the Homecoming mood takes yet another hit. Later Martin and Smitty track the pair down, and Martin tries to say sorry, but Jacob walks out first.

Beyond the Gates Spoilers (BTG Spoilers) Dani Dupree, Andre Richardson, Bill Hamilton
Beyond the Gates Recap (BTG Recap) Dani Dupree, Andre Richardson, Bill Hamilton

Andre Fears Losing Dani

Elsewhere in the house, Andre and Dani start bickering about how often she’s by Bill’s side. Shanice and Anita cut in with a bit of polite small talk and then depart, and Andre immediately starts yelling because he’s scared of losing her. Dani assures him that won’t happen, wraps him in a hug, and pledges to put it behind her since Bill is back on his feet, a promise with roughly the shelf life of a tailgate hot dog. Chelsea strolls over and announces she’ll never forgive Hayley for what she did to this family, a pointed reminder that this clan’s capacity for grudges is truly Olympic.

Later, Dani lingers at the edge of the room when Andre enters, and Nicole corners her sister for a spat in which Nicole backs Andre on the Bill question. By day’s end, Dani tracks Andre down again, and the two profess their love.

Deanna Begs Vanessa to Dump Joey

Earlier, Vanessa McBride surprises Deanna at the club with the news that she’s skipping Homecoming, even though it’s Deanna’s final year. She admits she isn’t feeling well, and Deanna spots a bandage on Vanessa’s arm and asks whether Joey is responsible. Vanessa explains she was carjacked, and Deanna calls her mom a moving target, labels Joey a suit-wearing thug, and storms off.

At the Duprees’ place, Nicole follows her to the foyer, where Deanna confesses she hopes to split Joey from her mother and blames him for the carjacking. Nicole counters that Vanessa is an adult capable of choosing for herself, and Deanna, unconvinced, leaves. Dani later talks with her about repairing her own rough patches with Chelsea years back and reminds her how deeply she loves her mother, and Deanna expresses gratitude and hurries off to find Vanessa. Back at the club, Deanna apologizes, admits she fears losing her mom, says she wants to work and lunch together, and begs her to leave Joey. The scene ends on an emotional note, because apparently Homecoming now includes a mother-daughter summit.

Izaiah and Kat Raise Eyebrows

Kat Richardson arrives solo and explains that Tomas Navarro is stuck at work, and Izaiah tells her Eva Thomas won’t be there either. Kat quips that he’d never even notice, and the two crack up, which would be perfectly harmless if an entire family weren’t watching. Izaiah and Elon trade quarterback talk and place a wager on the game.

Later, Chelsea eyes Kat suspiciously. As everyone prepares to leave, Chelsea, Naomi and Jacob observe Izaiah and Kat laughing and conclude they resemble a couple. For the record, Kat is Eva’s half-sister, so everyone is basically watching a very awkward family tree take a field trip.
