Young and the Restless Recap September 22, 2026: Claire Newman’s Past Refuses to Stay Buried

THIS YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS RECAP HAS CLAIRE NEWMAN UNRAVELING

TL;DR: This Young and the Restless Recap has Claire Newman spiraling over a ghost from her past she buried under a decade of therapy and good behavior, right before Nate Hastings and Stephanie Simmons full-send rehearse the most awkward parental confession in Genoa City history, and Matt Clark proves once again that leaving town is a lot easier to talk about than to actually do.

Claire’s Past Comes Swinging Back

Genuinely having a decent day for once, Claire Newman is texting with Kyle Abbott at the Tack House and even cracking a smile, which immediately tips her mother off that something’s up. She fibs about a meme. Victoria Newmandoesn’t buy it for a second, correctly guessing her daughter’s been starved for a laugh ever since Nick’s return from rehab started giving everyone low-grade anxiety, herself very much included. Claire, ever the realist, reminds her mother that nobody can stop Nick from relapsing if he decides to, and Victoria, ever the Newman, agrees while still absolutely planning to hover anyway.

Then Claire’s phone lights up with a birthday reminder for “Aunt” Jordan Howard, a notification she swears she meant to delete approximately one thousand years ago, and suddenly the good mood evaporates. Claire spirals into a flashback about her own scorched-earth teenage era, back when Jordan taught her that the fastest way to win a popularity contest was to sabotage the competition into expulsion. She’s horrified at who she used to be. Victoria gently reminds her she was a kid, and that Jordan doesn’t get to reach through a screen and ruin her day anymore, though judging by Claire’s face, that ship may have already sailed. When Kyle texts to move their “meeting” to a motel, of all locations, Victoria insists on going anyway, brushing off her daughter’s very fair observation that maybe, just maybe, Mom could stand to be a little more selfish and a little less committed to holding this entire family together with her bare hands.

Nate and Stephanie Rehearse Reality

Over at the GCAC, Nate Hastings and Stephanie Simmons skip the dance floor for a table and a conversation that’s been a long time coming. Stephanie’s been telling her son they’re “just friends,” which was arguably never true and is definitely not true now that Nate’s fully willing to slap the word “dating” on whatever this is. She’s less worried about the label and more worried about breaking the news that Mom has, in fact, been having a whole situationship, blow by blow omitted. Nate, delighted by her bluntness as usual, offers to have his own conversation with her son directly, since the two of them have history that could use some smoothing over.

What follows is a genuinely unhinged little role-play session where Nate plays her son so Stephanie can practice her big reveal speech, complete with Nate hyping himself up as boyfriend material in the third person. It actually works, and the two agree to shelve the real conversation until her son’s back from London, choosing instead to enjoy their salads and whatever this relationship currently is, undefined labels and all.

Matt Can’t Actually Leave

At Society, Matt Clark is doing his best impression of a man who’s totally leaving town, right up until Patty Williamstexts that it’s go-time and he tells her to hold her horses instead. Turns out reciting your own exit speech doesn’t work if you keep getting interrupted by memories of Phyllis Summers calling you her best friend.

Over at Crimson Lights, Phyllis is busy getting cornered by Nick Newman, fresh off his return to work, who wants to know if she talked Matt into skipping town. She hasn’t, and she’s furious nobody will give the man an inch. Nick admits even he can see Matt’s changed, but old habits die hard and he’s not ready to fully stand down. Phyllis pushes back hard, insisting she knows exactly what she’s doing and doesn’t need saving, and gets brutally honest about why Matt appeals to her in the first place: he’s the only one lately who doesn’t treat her like a problem to be managed.

Nick, to his credit, actually apologizes for making her feel that way, but draws the line at pretending Matt’s past sins are erased. Before things get any more tender, Matt calls, and Phyllis walks off to take it, leaving Nick to run into Kyle and gripe about the Jabot challenge going nowhere.

Back at Society, Matt finally makes the call, swears Patty didn’t rattle him, and asks to see her. Phyllis, unimpressed, wants to know exactly what game he thinks he’s playing. Fair question, honestly.
