Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) walked into Society this week and did something Genoa City never saw coming. He asked Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) if the two of them could ever stop trading insults and finally bury the hatchet. Billy did not hesitate. No, he told him, because hating Adam gives him a reason to wake up in the morning. It was one of the coldest lines Y&R has aired in years, and it landed like a slap.
Then Adam poured gasoline on the fire. He confided that Delia Abbott came to him in a dream while his son Connor Newman was battling OCD. Billy snapped, warned Adam to never speak Delia‘s name to him again, and stormed out of the restaurant. One day later, Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) handed her partner the hard truth. Billy is never going to forgive him, and chasing absolution is a fool’s errand.

Did Adam Ever Pay for Delia’s Death?
Yes, Adam Newman has paid for Delia‘s death again and again since that awful October night in 2013, when his car struck the little girl on a dark road and he drove away without ever knowing she was there.
Fans online are digging through the receipts this week, and the list is staggering. In January 2014, a grieving Billy (played at the time by Billy Miller) kidnapped Adam (then Michael Muhney) at gunpoint and forced a confession at Delia‘s roadside memorial. In the struggle that followed, the gun went off and the car plunged over a cliff before exploding in flames. Adam crawled away from the burning wreck and let the whole world, including his own family, believe he was dead for almost a year.
He resurfaced months later with a surgically rebuilt face, living under the stolen identity of Gabriel Bingham (Justin Hartley stepped into the role). When the masquerade collapsed, Adam finally stood trial for Delia‘s death. On October 23, 2015, a jury found him guilty and a judge handed down ten years in prison. The sentence was knocked down to probation on appeal, but the universe was not done with him. Chloe Mitchell (Elizabeth Hendrickson), Delia‘s shattered mother, mowed Adam down with a car right outside the courthouse.
Chloe still wanted more. In 2016, Adam was framed for murder and sentenced to thirty years. After he escaped to a remote cabin with Chelsea and Connor, Chloe tranquilized him, and the cabin exploded on September 1, 2016. He was presumed dead for nearly three years, until Sharon Newman tracked him to Las Vegas in 2019. There, an amnesiac poker shark calling himself Spider had no clue he was ever Adam Newman, no memory of Genoa City, and no idea a dead girl’s shadow was still waiting for him back home.
What’s Next for Adam and Billy?
Could this mean the feud is headed somewhere darker than insults at Society? Don’t be surprised if Sally Spectra‘s (Courtney Hope) pregnancy pours fuel on the fire, because Billy is preparing for fatherhood and an October wedding while Adam still grieves the infant daughter he lost with Sally in 2023. Given Adam‘s history, his sudden push to have another baby with Chelsea looks like a man trying to outrun his ghosts instead of facing them.
There are a few ways this powder keg blows. Billy‘s obsession could curdle into something dangerous and cost him Sally‘s trust right before the wedding. Adam could spiral and prove every terrible thing Billy believes about him. Or, if these writers stay true to form, a crisis could force the two men to save each other whether they like it or not. Adam Newman has survived cliffs, courtrooms, and cabin explosions, but Billy‘s memory may be the one sentence he can never appeal.
