The Young and the Restless
DEAR Y&R, WHAT WAS THE POINT? Two Star Returns Later, Holden Novak Still Doesn’t Have a Storyline
Holden Novak’s Y&R reveal was supposed to matter, but he wasn’t even Malcolm Winters’ bone marrow match, and he still has no real storyline.
THE REVEAL DIDN’T EVEN SAVE MALCOLM’S LIFE
Y&R brought back Shemar Moore and Vivica A. Fox for a multi-episode arc just to reveal Holden Novak as Malcolm Winters’ secret son, anchoring him to one of Genoa City’s most storied families. Months later, Holden was not even a match for Malcolm’s bone marrow transplant, Malcolm has barely been seen since, Stephanie is now leaving the canvas for an extended stretch, and Holden still does not have a job or a storyline to show for any of it.
A Reveal Built Around a Medical Emergency
Malcolm Winters and Stephanie Simmons returned to Genoa City for a specific reason. Malcolm was diagnosed with aplastic anemia and needed a bone marrow transplant from a blood relative, and that urgency is exactly what drove Stephanie to finally tell Holden Novak the truth about his real father. The whole reveal existed to serve that medical crisis. Holden Novak learning he was a Winters was not simply a family twist, it was supposed to matter immediately.
Except it did not. Holden was not a compatible match after all. Cane Ashby ended up being the one who could actually help Malcolm, which means the entire reason for revealing Holden’s parentage in the first place never even paid off the way the story clearly intended.

The Parents Disappeared, and So Did the Point
Since that reveal, Malcolm Winters has barely been seen on screen. Stephanie Simmons stuck around longer than expected, developing a real romance with Nate Hastings along the way, but she is now stepping away from Genoa City for an extended stretch to film another project. Both parents who gave this reveal its weight are effectively gone, at least for now.
That leaves Holden exactly where he started before any of this happened, minus the mystery. He is still without a real job, still wandering the edges of other people’s storylines, and still has not figured out how to use a bloodline connection to two of the most powerful families in Genoa City. Fans have been asking what this man actually does for months now, and the paternity reveal never actually answered that question.
Two Star Returns for This
Bringing back Shemar Moore and Vivica A. Fox is not a small production decision. Y&R clearly wanted this reveal to matter, to reshape Holden’s place on the canvas and give him a foundation he never had before. Instead, the show spent that star power on a twist that resolved medically without him, then let both parents exit the canvas without ever building Holden into anything more substantial.
Blood Ties That Never Turned Into a Storyline
Holden Novak is technically a Winters now. He shares blood with Lily and with Devon‘s side of the family. None of that has translated into an actual storyline, an actual job, or an actual reason for viewers to care that the reveal happened at all.

Two Stars, No Payoff
Y&R brought back two major stars solely to reveal Holden Novak as Malcolm Winters’ son, and the reveal did not even save Malcolm’s life, since Cane turned out to be the actual donor. With both parents now gone from the canvas and Holden still without a real storyline, the entire twist changed nothing.
