Andre Calls In A Favor

Andre Richardson had exactly one rule for his marriage, and it was to keep the woman from his past on another continent. Heather Armstrong read that rule, laughed, and went house hunting.

She caught him mid-smooch with Dani Dupree, and Dani, bless her trusting heart, grinned and waved the intruder over to join them. Heather sat, sipped, and announced she had bought a condo beside her brother’s place. Andre blurted a panicked question about why on earth she would move here, which made Dani blink. So he scrambled and claimed his studio was in that area and the neighborhood was unsafe, a bold thing to say about a street anchored by a casino owner with a gun in his desk. Heather was unmoved. He urged her toward Potomac instead, but her bid was already in, and her phone pinged with the sellers’ yes right on cue. Dani cheered. Andre fled. Heather wiggled her fingers and called him her new neighbor on his way out the door.

Once he was safely out of earshot, Andre phoned Henry, his London connection, and delivered the news that Heather was in town. Then he asked, in the calm voice of a man whose hands were shaking, whether she could be extradited. Henry, who once infiltrated her operation, wanted nothing to do with the question. By his account, her connections ran through everything, and the only healthy plan was to keep far away from her.

Andre could not keep away, because he needed her gone, and he said so. Henry’s reply was the sort of friendly warning that follows you to bed: Heather would slit Andre’s throat before breakfast, and Dani’s right after it. Then Henry hung up on the favor, which left Andre with a bad feeling, a worse plan, and no help at all. Calling in a favor is supposed to feel like power. This felt like returning a library book to a murderer.

Across town, Dani sauntered into Joey Armstrong’s casino back room to collect ten grand on a wager over whether she and Andre would last twelve months. Joey paid up and then offered double or nothing on year two. Dani shook on it with a grin, because nothing says marital confidence like gambling on it against a guy who keeps a gun handy.

She floated home to celebrate the anniversary of their move-in, and the kiss was lovely until she asked why he had gone so hot on Heather. Andre insisted that keeping clear of that woman was the only smart move. Dani heard this and decided the best answer was a guest list. She called Heather a good person and wanted her over for a visit, and Andre exploded, yelling that Dani had no idea what she was talking about. He had every fact he needed about Heather, which is true and also exactly the problem. Dani, meanwhile, watched her calm husband shout about a near stranger, and somewhere a very large alarm bell went unheard.

Heather Plays The Sweet Sister

On Beyond the Gates, the only thing more dangerous than a locked gate is a closing date. Vanessa McBride learned that when she trudged into the casino’s private room with an apology: Heather had snagged the condo. Joey took the news with a sigh. His sister, he said, usually got her way, and lately she reminded him of their father, a comparison that would send most people running for the exits. Vanessa had never found Heather scary, and if Joey had his way, she never would. Her faith in humanity is adorable. It will be tested.

Outside, Heather and Vanessa wrapped up the condo paperwork, and Vanessa casually asked how often Heather planned to visit. Heather wondered aloud if she was trying to talk her out of coming, then added a gentle warning that it would disappoint her if Vanessa tried. Vanessa swore Joey’s happiness was her only goal. Heather promised to keep her out of the middle of their family business, in the tone of a woman who intends to do the opposite.

Then came the show. Heather turned up at Joey’s house and swore she would stop nagging him about partnering up. He rolled his eyes. She conjured a few tears, murmuring that she wanted to be closer, and he softened enough to smile and squeeze her hand, promising they would talk soon. On the way out, Heather dried her eyes on the porch like a faucet that had finished its job. Joey got an Oscar-worthy performance for the price of one condo.

Hayley Wants A New Name

Hayley Lawson spent the day barricaded in her hotel room, which is what happens when Heather bumps into you twice, Joey leans on you, and Vernon Dupree takes his turn, all for what she considered nothing. Venturing outside was off the table.

Her cousin Randy Parker turned up, upset that she had sold him out. Hayley reminded him she had nearly been killed, a defense that is hard to argue with. Randy advised her never to let anyone see she was rattled, and she admitted she knew. What she needed, she confessed, was a new identity, and Randy could see that was why she had phoned. She denied it, then dangled a fatter share if he helped with her next play. They landed on half a million and shook. Hayley added one request: this time she wanted a classier fake past. Her last one ended with a power saw and a tarp, so the bar is in the basement.

Naomi Surprises Bill At Work

Bill Hamilton was caught off guard to find his daughter Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne in his workspace. They talked about Smitty’s innocence, plus the effort Jacob Hawthorne and she were making to wall off their clashing jobs from their marriage.

Then she produced his birthday present, a gadget that cranks out paper planes, a callback to the ones the two used to fold when she was small. They built a squadron, sent it sailing across the room, and Bill confessed that Chelsea Hamilton had built him a dating profile. Father and daughter shared a good laugh at the idea that a man who survived a poisoning is now being matched by an algorithm. Bill also admitted he wished he had heeded his family’s warnings about Hayley a lot sooner. Later he tried, again, to lure Naomi into working for him, and she said no, again. Some traditions endure.

Engagement News Sparks A Sister Fight

Ted Richardson and Shanice Johnson were cuddled up in his office, with Ted leaning in to nuzzle her, when Eva Thomas barged in glowing about a conference. She grabbed Shanice’s hand and congratulated her, thanks to a text from Ted, then fretted about how her mother would take the news. Ted’s love life now requires a communications plan.

Over at Uptown, Kat Richardson and Chelsea compared notes on how the family was handling Smitty’s arrest. They would keep Samantha Richardson busy with work, Tyrell Richardson was already back in school, and sales were climbing. Leslie Thomas stopped by, and Kat dropped the engagement news on her. Leslie claimed her heart now belonged to a man who valued her, which surprised Chelsea. Kat preferred Leslie behind bars, but a public humbling would do nicely as a consolation prize.

Leslie joined Izaiah Hawthorne, who offered sympathy about Ted, and she assured him she was happy with Marcel Malone. Eva arrived with hugs to deliver the engagement news herself, only to learn Kat had beaten her to it. Eva sneered. Leslie was fine, which stunned Eva so thoroughly she asked if Leslie was sure. When Leslie left, Eva rounded on Kat to demand whether she was trying to make Ted’s life harder, and ordered Izaiah and Chelsea to butt out. She had planned to be compassionate. Kat reminded her that Leslie did not deserve compassion. Eva called her sister selfish, and Kat laughed at the sight of Eva claiming moral superiority. Insults flew, including one very rude word from Eva, and Kat told her to keep their mother in check, because she would not let Leslie wreck one more party.

Later, in a hospital hallway, Ted and Shanice swapped wedding ideas. Ted compared the plans to his first wedding, and Shanice winced for a moment. Then Leslie floated in with a bouquet and best wishes, swearing Marcel had captured her heart and the past was behind her. Ted hoped she would not scheme at his wedding, and Leslie claimed she was above it. Ted and Shanice swallowed none of it, and both looked nervous. A bouquet from Leslie is the plot’s version of a smoke alarm in a quiet room.
