The New Year Firings Nobody Saw Coming
Someone at Days of Our Lives decided 2026 needed to start with maximum chaos. Carson Boatman, Raven Bowens, Leo Howard, and Ashley Puzemis all returned from holiday hiatus to discover they’d been fired. Merry belated Christmas, here’s your pink slip.
The four actors portray Johnny DiMera, Chanel Dupree DiMera, Tate Black, and Holly Jonas respectively. That’s two of the show’s most popular couples gone in one brutal swoop. “Janel” shippers and “Tally” fans are currently somewhere between denial and rage.
Carson Boatman was reportedly in the middle of renegotiating his contract when the axe fell. Talk about timing. He’s handled it with more grace than most of us could muster, telling outlets he’s “incredibly grateful” for his five years on the show.
Due to that infamous nine-month tape-to-air delay, viewers won’t actually see these characters exit until late 2026 or early 2027. So enjoy Johnny and Chanel’s pregnancy storyline and Holly and Tate’s college romance while you can.

The Chad DiMera Soap Opera Swap
In possibly the most soap opera thing to ever happen behind the scenes of a soap opera, Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless essentially traded actors like baseball cards.
Billy Flynn announced his departure from the role of Chad DiMera in March 2025 after over a decade in Salem. He promptly headed to Genoa City where he debuted on June 19, 2025, initially as the mysterious Aristotle Dumas before being revealed as Cane Ashby.
Meanwhile, Conner Floyd packed his bags from Y&R where he’d played Chance Chancellor since 2021, and started filming at DAYS on June 23, 2025. His first episode as the new Chad DiMera airs April 21, 2026.
Flynn himself gave Floyd his blessing on Instagram, writing “Chad is in great hands.” And in typical Billy Flynn fashion, he joked that Chad “just got a lot more beautiful” with the recast.
Alice Halsey Trading Salem for the Prairie
Rachel Black is losing another portrayer, and this time it’s because 11-year-old Alice Halsey landed the role of a lifetime.
Halsey was cast as Laura Ingalls in Netflix’s upcoming Little House on the Prairie reboot, announced in May 2025. The young actress shared on Instagram that she “loves all of the Little House books so much” and is thrilled to bring Laura to life.
DAYS confirmed they’re recasting Rachel Black with a new actress debuting in March 2026. Given that Rachel is currently at Bayview eating evidence and plotting with Sophia Choi, whoever takes over has quite the storyline waiting for them.
More Recasts on the Horizon
The departures don’t stop there. Al Calderon is exiting the role of Javi Hernandez after landing a series regular gig on NBC’s Brilliant Minds. He’ll be on screen through May 2026 before a recast takes over.
Marissa Reyes is also departing as Arianna Horton after less than a year in the role. Her final episodes air in March 2026, with a new actress stepping in by April.
Add in Cary Christopher’s departure as Thomas DiMera for an Amazon Prime project, and Salem is looking at a very different canvas by spring.
What This Means for the Show
Days of Our Lives has officially entered what insiders are calling a “bloodbath” phase. The remaining cast is reportedly shaken, wondering who’s next. If actors with major frontburner storylines can be cut without warning, nobody feels safe.
The irony isn’t lost on fans that DAYS has spent months talking about attracting younger viewers, then promptly fired four of their youngest cast members. Ashley Puzemis literally just won Soap Central’s Best Emerging Talent award in December.
Whether these changes represent creative vision or corporate cost-cutting remains to be seen. What we know is that Salem is about to look dramatically different by the end of 2026.
