Breaking News: The Return

Hold onto your seats, DAYS fans, because the DiMera dynasty is about to get even more interesting! Remember when we thought Thaao Penghlis had bid farewell to soap operas? Well, surprise! Not only is the legendary actor returning as Tony DiMera, but he’s already back on set and sharing some seriously exciting behind-the-scenes tea about what’s brewing in Salem.

Picture this: There we were, still processing the amazing news about all those beloved faces heading back to Salem next June. (I mean, seriously – LeAnn Hunley, Christie Clark, Chandler Massey, Victoria Konefal, Charles Shaughnessy, Matt Ashford, AND Melissa Reeves? Talk about a dream lineup!) But wait, there’s more…

Behind the Scenes Revelations

Penghlis just dropped a photo that has DiMera fans absolutely buzzing! The actor shared a snapshot from the DAYS makeup room, where he was hanging out with none other than his TV brother, Billy Flynn (Chad DiMera). But it’s what he said about the experience that has us all sitting up and paying attention.

“So good to be back at Days working with one of my faves,” Penghlis revealed, giving major props to his co-star Flynn. “Billy is so special to work with. Since he’s had his two boys his heart has become more open.” And can we talk about that cryptic little teaser he dropped? “The new writers are making a difference. DiMera is back.” Oh. My. Goodness!

New Writers, New Direction

Speaking of those new writers… Paula Cwikly and Jeanne Marie Ford have taken over the reins from Ron Carlivati, and according to Penghlis, they’re breathing fresh life into the DiMera storylines. Now, due to DAYS’ unique filming schedule (don’t you just love soap opera magic?), we won’t see their work until after April 2025, when Carlivati’s final episodes finish streaming on Peacock.

Penghlis’s Change of Heart

Here’s the real kicker – back in May, Penghlis had actually announced he was done with soap operas! “Things are changing with new characters and budget constraints,” he’d told Soap Opera News. “Some characters are not there anymore. It’s time to move on and appreciate the time that’s been spent.”

But clearly, something major changed his mind. Could it be those exciting new scripts from Cwikly and Ford? Whatever it was, we’re thrilled he’s had this change of heart. There’s just something about seeing Tony DiMera back in Salem that feels absolutely right.

What’s Coming in 2025

For those keeping track (and we know you are!), we’ll have to wait until summer 2025 to see what Tony’s got up his sleeve this time around. But based on Penghlis’s enthusiasm and that intriguing comment about the DiMeras being “back,” it sounds like it’ll be worth the wait!
