On Monday she and Chad DiMera walked into Dominic Marino‘s house in Italy and found a chess set matching the one Stefano willed to Marlena, every pawn still on the board. Chad opened a hidden compartment and pulled out a photograph dated 1992, Stefano beside a young boy.

Nobody on screen has said who that boy is. EJ asked out loud in that room and got no answer, and by Thursday Chad was still wondering whether the child is the pawn Marlena’s own set is missing. Chad spends Friday confronting Cat Greene, and he is not walking in cold. On Thursday Belle floated bringing Cat into the investigation because Cat used to be ISA, and Chad killed the idea on the spot, even after a check on her story came back clean. Circulating chatter frames Friday as Chad demanding what she knows about EJ DiMera, the man who signs her cheques.

Cat has been telling the truth in instalments. She told EJ on August 31 that she had been ISA and that their meeting at an Italian clinic was no accident, then told Leo Stark the same on Thursday and swore she is out. Belle put the buyer’s name on the board back in the episode that exposed who is buying the Kiriakis estate.

Across town Rita Lesley gets the other interrogation. EJ presses her for everything she has on Dominic Marino, which sounds sensible until you remember the last two weeks. Rita gave him a true name for the man buying the mansion. She also told him to his face she had not seen Stefano’s ring, then lifted it off his coffee table and pocketed it.

So somebody photographed a dead man holding a child and locked the print inside a copy of the chess set he willed to Marlena. My gut tells me she knows precisely when it was taken. Reading between the lines, this stopped being a clue about a reclusive billionaire the moment Chad lifted that panel. It is a clue about the years she lost.

Sydney DiMera returns home to Salem carrying none of this. She turned up unannounced at her father’s door in Rome on Thursday, a week after a Monte Carlo poker table introduced her to us. EJ praised the law career she built and asked what she knows about Dominic Marino. She knows the name. She has never met the man.

The other conversation is smaller and meaner. Holly Jonas finally opens up to Arianna Horton about Mason Whitfield, the newcomer who heard her name on September 1 and would not shake her hand. What Holly does not know is that Ari already has the answer. Mason told her on September 10 that Holly is responsible for the death of someone he knew, and refused to say who.

Don’t be surprised if Ari repeats it word for word. Holly has spent two weeks asking why a stranger despises her, with an anonymous text on her phone asking if she is having fun. Tate brushed it off as a wrong number. Nobody has tied those threads together on screen yet.
