AL CALDERON PUT THE ACTION IN ACTING WHICH LED US TO CRYING IN AN ORTHODONTIST’S WAITING ROOM

TL;DR: Al Calderon delivered a gut-wrenching farewell as Javi Hernandez on Tuesday’s Days of Our Lives when Leo begged him not to leave for Texas. Those were real tears when Javi hugged Leo for the last time, and now we’re all emotionally compromised.

Al Calderon Made Us Feel Every Single Moment

We need a BOX of tissues because Al Calderon just DESTROYED us on today’s Days of Our Lives. Tuesday’s episode gave us the scene we’ve been dreading since Javi Hernandez announced he was leaving Salem to care for his father during and after his quadruple bypass surgery. Leo Stark (Greg Rikaart) was able to talk to Javi after Trey’s christening, and before his flight to Texas, and what followed was one of the most emotionally devastating goodbyes this show has delivered in years.

Javi told Leo he couldn’t chat for long because he had a plane to catch. But Leo, being Leo, wasn’t about to let the love of his life walk away without a fight. “I have no intention of saying goodbye,” Leo insisted.

And that’s when Al Calderon reminded every single viewer why losing him to NBC’s Brilliant Minds is such a tremendous loss for daytime television.

Those Were Real Tears Because Al Calderon Delivered

Here’s the thing about soap opera acting that people who don’t watch daytime don’t understand. These performers sometimes film dozens of pages of dialogue per day. They don’t get multiple takes. They don’t get weeks to prepare. They show up, they hit their marks, and they deliver.

Al Calderon didn’t just deliver on Tuesday. He DEMOLISHED. When Javi and Leo hugged for what might be the last time, Calderon was crying actual tears. Not glycerin drops. Not “acting” tears. The man was genuinely emotional about saying goodbye to this character, this storyline, and his scene partner Greg Rikaart.

The beauty of Javi Hernandez has always been the vulnerability Calderon brought to the role. This is a character who fell in love with Leo Stark knowing full well about Leo’s messy history with Dimitri von Leuschner. Javi chose Leo anyway. He proposed on Thanksgiving. He married Leo on New Year’s Eve with Marlena Evans officiating. And then Dimitri showed up in Horton Town Square and everything fell apart.

Javi Deserved Better Than This Exit

Let’s be honest about what’s happening here. Al Calderon booked a series regular role on Brilliant Minds, and Days of Our Lives had to write Javi out accordingly. The show chose to have Javi’s father need emergency heart surgery, giving Javi a reason to return to Texas with no confirmed return date.

The writing gave Calderon every opportunity to phone this in. Father’s sick, gotta go, bye. Instead, Calderon found every emotional beat possible in this material. When Javi said he couldn’t put his life on hold waiting for Leo to figure out his feelings about Dimitri, that wasn’t bitterness. It was heartbreak. Calderon played Javi as a man who loves Leo completely but respects himself enough to walk away rather than compete with a ghost.

Soap Opera News already named Al Calderon their Performer of the Week for his work during the wedding chaos. But Tuesday’s goodbye might have been his finest hour.

Greg Rikaart Matched Him Beat for Beat

Credit where credit is due. Greg Rikaart showed up ready to play opposite Calderon’s emotional farewell. Leo begging Javi not to leave wasn’t just dialogue. Rikaart made Leo’s desperation feel genuine and earned after everything these two characters have been through together.

The chemistry between Calderon and Rikaart has been electric since Javi first appeared in Salem in February 2024. Watching them say goodbye felt like watching two actors who genuinely care about each other, not just two performers hitting their marks.

When the show eventually recasts Javi, that new actor will have enormous shoes to fill. Calderon defined this character. He made Javi passionate, professional, sensitive, and fierce. He made us root for Leo to choose Javi over Dimitri. He made us believe in this love story.

Al Calderon Will Be Seen Through May 2026

Here’s the silver lining for those of us who are emotionally destroyed right now. Due to Days of Our Lives filming nine months ahead, Al Calderon will continue appearing as Javi Hernandez through May 2026. This isn’t necessarily his permanent goodbye, just a temporary exit while Javi cares for his father.

And the show has confirmed that Javi will be recast, meaning Leo’s husband isn’t disappearing from Salem forever. A new Javi will eventually return, presumably ready to fight for his marriage.

But no recast will replicate what Al Calderon brought to this role. As he said in his farewell message to fans, “While I’m just a small grain of sand, I’m just happy I got to pass through the hourglass.”

Al, you were so much more than a grain of sand. Thank you. We’ll miss you.
