TL;DR: Jennifer Horton Deveraux (Melissa Reeves) is catching serious heat from Days of Our Lives fans over her custody crusade against Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn). With her own hit-and-run history and addiction past, viewers are calling out the glaring double standard.

The Horton Hypocrisy Has Fans Furious

Something snapped in Salem this week. And no, it wasn’t just the tension between the Hortons and the DiMeras. It was the patience of longtime Days of Our Lives viewers who have had it up to HERE with Jennifer Horton Deveraux’s self-righteous crusade against Chad DiMera.

Let’s set the scene. On January 21, 2026, Jack, Jennifer, and Chad sat down for custody mediation regarding Thomas and Charlotte. No lawyers present. Just raw emotion and years of unresolved grief colliding in one room. Thomas had already confided in his teacher Jeremy Horton that he felt responsible for the adults fighting. The poor kid expressed uncertainty about potentially moving to Boston with his grandparents.

The mediation outcome? Chad keeps custody IF he never pursues a relationship with Cat Green (AnnaLynne McCord) again. You know, the woman who spent months impersonating the late Abigail DiMera before the fake Abigail reveal shattered the Horton family’s peace in October 2024.

But here’s where it gets messy. Thomas said the agreement wasn’t good enough. He doesn’t trust his own father. And Jennifer Horton Deveraux pushed HARD on January 23 because that fragile trust still wasn’t there.

Chad’s Impossible Choice

Chad reframed the entire conflict. This isn’t about Cat, he insisted. It’s about Thomas. So what did he do? He offered to make the “no Cat” promise legally binding with written consequences if he breaks it.

Thomas actually responded to the idea. Jack and Jennifer Horton Deveraux agreed to step back and let Chad rebuild trust with his son directly. Victory for Chad? Not exactly. The man essentially signed away his romantic future just to keep his children. A nine-year-old now holds legal leverage over his father’s dating life.

This “kids controlling dating” trope has Days of Our Lives fans absolutely fuming. The writers have handed Thomas a veto power that feels wildly unrealistic and frustrating to watch unfold.

Where Was Jennifer When Peter Blake Died?

Now let’s talk about the elephant in the crypt. Peter Blake (Dan Gauthier) returned to Salem on December 19, 2025. This man was Jennifer’s ex-husband. He once faked his death to frame Jack for murder. He kidnapped people. He obsessed over Jennifer for decades.

On January 7, 2026, Peter woke up after Kristen DiMera pulled the plug on his life support. He grabbed Kristen and threatened her before a masked figure tampered with his IV. Code Blue. By January 8, Kayla pronounced Peter dead with Dr. Wilhelm Rolf lurking suspiciously nearby.

And where was Jennifer Horton Deveraux during all of this? Nowhere. Not at the hospital. Not reacting to the death of a man who terrorized her for years. Fans noticed. And they’re calling it a massive plot hole that undermines her current “protective grandmother” act.

The Receipts Keep Piling Up

Long-time viewers remember what the show conveniently glosses over. Jennifer’s painkiller addiction was explicitly referenced during the mediation discussions. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

During a storyline when Cady McClain played the role, Jennifer was high on painkillers and committed a hit-and-run against her stepdaughter Gwen Rizczech. She fled the scene. She went to rehab. But she never admitted the truth to police.

So let’s get this straight. Jennifer can run over her stepdaughter while impaired, hide it from authorities, and still position herself as the moral authority on parenting? She can judge Chad for lying about seeing Cat while her own closet is bursting with skeletons?

The hypocrisy is thick enough to cut with a knife.

The Horton House of Cards

Making matters worse, Jeremy Horton got arrested on January 23 for stalking Stephanie Johnson. Julie Williams jumped to defend him immediately despite police evidence. This is the family that’s supposedly a better environment for Thomas and Charlotte?

Speculation suggests Chad will eventually test that “no Cat” clause. Whether he slips emotionally or gets forced into contact, Jennifer will be waiting to pounce. Her January 29 pivot to “helping” Chad feels suspiciously like a setup for the next trap.

With Billy Flynn departing and Conner Floyd set to debut as the new Chad on April 21, 2026, this custody war may be the exit ramp for one version of the character and the launchpad for another.
