Carly looked Valentin in the eyes on Wednesday’s episode and told him he is clearly in love with Anna. He did not deny it. He bought the plane ticket. The Vanna autopsy was supposed to be final. The autopsy got a heartbeat.

The Original Sin Was a Twin and a Kill Directive
The lie at the bottom of this relationship is forty years old. Valentin met Anna at the WSB Training Academy under the name Ivan Theodore. He fell for her. She rejected him. Then Anna’s twin sister Alex disguised herself as Anna, slept with him at a church drop site, and let him fall in love thinking it was the real thing. Valentin found the kill directive in her bag and ran. He spent the next four decades thinking the only woman he ever loved had set him up to die. The lie was not his. The lie was hers. And it set the template for every betrayal that followed.
The Port Charles Slow Burn
Valentin showed up in Port Charles in 2016 and the custody war over Charlotte should have made Anna his sworn enemy forever. Instead, the spy training pulled them back into each other’s orbit by 2017. They were allies. They were attracted. They were two professional liars trying to be honest with one person on earth and barely managing it. First kisses landed in 2021. Dating started in June 2022. By April 2023 they were officially lovers. For about six months it worked.
The Bullet That Ended Them
On Halloween 2023, Anna walked into her own apartment, mistook Charlotte’s flashlight for a gun, and shot Valentin’s daughter in the abdomen. Charlotte lived. The relationship did not. The shooting was the consequence of a secret Valentin had been keeping for months: Victor Cassadine had brainwashed Charlotte at boarding school and Valentin had not told Anna she was being terrorized by his own kid. The weight detonated the trust. The lying spies had been lying to each other again.
The Buenos Aires Goodbye Was Forever
By March 2025, Valentin was on the run with Charlotte after being made the WSB scapegoat for Pikeman. Anna and Jason tracked them to Buenos Aires. A WSB kill squad was minutes behind. Valentin sent Charlotte back with Jason and stayed for the goodbye scene that should have ended this story for good. He told her the time she thought she loved him was the best of his life. She told him she did not think she loved him. She truly loved him. Then she let him go.
That was supposed to be it.
The Wyndemere Captivity Came Next
Two and a half years to the day after the Charlotte shooting, Anna was kidnapped and held captive in the basement room under Wyndemere by the Sidwell operation Cullum runs. She carved knives out of the bedframe. She left a message on the wall. She escaped, got recaptured, was driven into a psychiatric break by Cullum gaslighting her about Cesar Faison being alive, and ended up in a French maximum-security facility for the criminally insane. Anna Devane is the most decorated WSB operative on the show and Cullum broke her.
Valentin Is Going to France
When Valentin got the call telling him Cullum had broken Anna, he wept. In Carly Spencer’s living room. With another woman currently sharing his bed. Carly stared him down and said the quiet part out loud. He is clearly in love with Anna. He did not argue. He told Carly he is going to France to break Anna out. The only reason he is detouring through Wyndemere first is because Cullum is the man who broke her and the only way to Cullum is through Sidwell’s operation.
The man on the run is risking his last bullet of freedom for the woman he was supposed to have finished mourning fourteen months ago.
The Autopsy Has a Pulse
Anna Devane left carved knives in a bedframe because she was going to fight her way out. Valentin Cassadine is going to France because she ran out of time to do it alone. The spy romance the show has been performing the last rites for will get tested by a maximum-security rescue mission, and if General Hospital does what soaps do, Anna Devane is coming home in Valentin’s arms.
