What started as a seemingly routine recovery from a stabbing wound turned tragic on Friday’s episode when Dex Heller met an unexpected and heartbreaking end. The former mob enforcer-turned-cop was recovering from surgery after being stabbed in the back at Rice Plaza by a mystery assailant earlier in the week. Though his medical team was confident about his recovery, things took a devastating turn when Dex suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

Despite the medical team’s best efforts, Dr. Isaiah Gannon had to deliver the crushing news to Josslyn and Anna that Dex didn’t make it. The shocking loss left Josslyn particularly devastated, having just visited her boyfriend who had assured her he was on the mend.

A Pattern Emerges

If this scenario feels eerily familiar, that’s because it is. Elizabeth Baldwin was quick to note the similarities to Sam McCall’s recent death, where she too survived a major surgery only to mysteriously die from cardiac arrest. We now know that Cyrus Renault was behind Sam’s death, having injected her IV with a lethal dose of digitalis.

“This isn’t right. You’re the second person to die like this. It just doesn’t make any sense,” Elizabeth observed ominously after Dex’s death. “Something very wrong is going on here.”

Evan Hofer, who brought Dex to life since May 2022, opened up to Entertainment Weekly about his exit: “I found out probably a few weeks before we filmed the scene. Honestly, I was just excited to find out what the story was going to be, and wanted to hear how that was going to go.”

The actor made the most of his final days on set, sharing: “My last few weeks were really just trying to soak in how much I loved playing Dex, and how much I loved all the people over at GH. I had such a wonderful time there over the last two-and-a-half years.”

Castmates Say Goodbye

The loss is felt deeply among the GH cast. In an exclusive interview with Soap Opera Digest, Tabyana Ali (Trina) shared her emotional reaction to learning of Hofer’s exit: “I was really hurt when he told me; I kind of got a little teary.” She added that while she’ll miss seeing her “energy partner” at work, their friendship will continue off-screen.
