Most people, when they decide to skip town for a couple of months, pack a bag. Maybe they stop their mail. They tell a few people where they are going and they go.

Jason Morgan is not most people.

When Jason Morgan decides to leave Port Charles with Britt Westbourne while Brick works on replicating her medication, his farewell checklist includes exactly one item that most people do not put on their farewell checklists. He is going to assassinate WSB Director Ross Cullum on his way out the door. As a parting gift. To Sonny Corinthos and Laura Collins and everyone else Cullum has been blackmailing and threatening and generally making miserable in Port Charles. Jason Morgan is leaving town and he is taking out the trash on his way out.

This is the most Jason Morgan solution to a departure that has ever existed in daytime television history and we need a moment to appreciate it.

The Plan, As Discussed

Here is what Jason told Sonny in their farewell conversation and every single detail of it is extraordinary.

He knows Cullum’s schedule. He has studied the man. He is confident he is the best person for the job and he turned down Sonny’s offer to have someone else handle it. He expects to be gone one to two months depending on how long it takes Brick to crack the medication. He is aware that killing a WSB director is the kind of thing that could send him to prison for the rest of his life if it is not handled cleanly. He told Sonny he understood the stakes. And then he said the risk was worth it to protect the people he loved.

Sonny told him to make it a clean hit or Jason would spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a WSB agent. Jason said he understood. And then they said goodbye the way Jason and Sonny always say goodbye, which is like two men who have been through too much together to say anything that adequately covers it and so they say the short version and trust the other one to hear everything underneath it.

What Cullum’s Removal Actually Means

This is not just Jason doing what Jason does. The removal of Ross Cullum has genuine strategic consequences for everyone in Port Charles and that is exactly why Jason is willing to take the risk.

With Cullum gone, Jenz Sidwell loses his WSB protection and his ability to run interference on the people blackmailing him. Sonny gets breathing room. Laura gets breathing room. The entire web of corruption that Cullum has been holding together for Sidwell starts to unravel without its central thread. Jason Morgan is not just leaving Port Charles. He is dismantling the mechanism that has been making everyone’s lives miserable on his way out and trusting Port Charles to handle the rest while he is gone.

One to Two Months. Maybe.

Jason expects to be gone one to two months. He said this to Sonny with the calm certainty of a man who makes plans and has absolutely no idea how many of his plans Port Charles has destroyed. One to two months. Sure. That tracks for a man who has been presumed dead four times and whose last departure lasted two and a half years.

Danny Morgan is here. Port Charles is here. And whatever Ross Cullum’s schedule looks like, Jason Morgan is going to find the opening, take the shot, and walk out of town carrying the only thing he has ever been able to fully commit to. A mission. A purpose. Someone who needs him.

He will be back this summer. Port Charles will lose its mind. And Ross Cullum will not be there to see it.
