PROSECUTORS WON’T SEEK CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING JOHNNY WACTOR

TL;DR: Los Angeles prosecutors announced Monday they will not pursue capital punishment against Robert Isaiah Barceleau, charged with murdering General Hospital actor Johnny Wactor during a catalytic converter theft in May 2024. He still faces life without parole.

Prosecutors Make Decision After Consulting Family

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Monday that Robert Isaiah Barceleau, 19, will not face the death penalty for the alleged murder of former General Hospital actor Johnny Wactor. The announcement comes months after District Attorney Nathan Hochman reinstated capital punishment as an option for what he described as “exceedingly rare cases.”

After careful consideration and conversations with Johnny Wactor’s family members, prosecutors determined this case does not meet that threshold. Barceleau, who has pleaded not guilty, still faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of the May 2024 shooting.

A Life Cut Short at 37

Johnny Wactor was leaving his bartending shift at a downtown Los Angeles rooftop bar around 3:30 a.m. on May 25, 2024, when he encountered men stealing the catalytic converter from his car. Police say one suspect shot him without provocation as he approached. The 37-year-old actor, beloved for his portrayal of Brando Corbin across nearly 200 episodes of General Hospital from 2020 to 2022, died shortly after at a nearby hospital.

During a January hearing, LAPD Detective Justin Howarth testified that Barceleau admitted to an undercover operative that he shot Johnny Wactor because the actor was approaching an accomplice. Co-defendant Sergio Estrada, also 19, allegedly yelled “no” when Barceleau drew his weapon and later described him as “hot-headed.” Both men were photographed hours after the killing, with Barceleau holding a semi-automatic weapon and Estrada holding a stack of cash.

Brando Corbin: A Hero On Screen and Off

The cruel irony of Johnny Wactor’s death is not lost on General Hospital fans. In his very first scene on January 30, 2020, Brando Corbin was shot while protecting Carly Spencer from an ambush by Cyrus Renault’s men in Sonny’s coffee warehouse. It was a heroic introduction that set the tone for everything his character would become.

Brando’s backstory was complicated. His mother Gladys had told everyone he died in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, but the truth was she’d declared him dead after a falling-out over his involvement with dangerous people. The character was a former Marine veteran, a recovered drug addict, and an ex-con who had served five years in prison. He carried the weight of PTSD and past mistakes, yet chose to rebuild his life as a mechanic at Xtreme Motors.

A Love Story That Captivated Fans

What truly made Johnny Wactor a fan favorite was Brando’s tender romance with Sasha Gilmore. After saving Sasha’s life when Cyrus Renault’s drugs nearly killed her, Brando became her rock through every storm. When Sasha revealed she was pregnant with his child, Brando chose her and their baby over a position in the Corinthos crime organization, even kicking his own mother out of his apartment to make room for their family.

The couple faced devastating tragedy when their infant son Liam was born with brain damage and died just days later. Through Sasha’s subsequent struggle with addiction, Brando stood by her unconditionally, eventually marrying her in a spontaneous ceremony at a roadside garage. Their love story ended far too soon when Brando was stabbed by the Hook killer and died from snake venom on September 20, 2022. Fans who mourned the fictional character now grieve the real man who brought him to life.

Two others connected to the crime have already been sentenced. Frank Olano received five years and eight months for accessory charges. Leonel Gutierrez received four years for attempted robbery and grand theft. Barceleau and Estrada return to court January 14 for a pretrial hearing.
