Daphne told Carter Walton the news herself, in the design office, unable to hold back her sniffles the second he walked in. She’s sorry, she said. She can’t give him a child. Carter insisted this couldn’t be right, and she explained the premature menopause diagnosis, the reason they’d never gotten pregnant despite trying. He held her and told her none of this was her fault.
Then it was his turn to fall apart. Carter Walton tried to reassure her that they still had dreams left, started the sentence, and couldn’t finish it. “We have such uh… we have…” he managed, and broke down crying before he could land the thought. He admitted this was hard. They’d get through it, he said, holding her while she cried into his chest.

Can Carter Survive Being Powerless?
That stammer says more than any full sentence could have. Carter Walton has spent this entire relationship getting exactly what he set out to get. He chased Daphne down the moment she tried to leave for Paris and put a ring on her hand before she could walk out the door. He worked his way into the COO chair at Forrester through sheer persistence. Whatever Carter wants, Carter has always found a way to make happen, and that pattern is precisely why this diagnosis hits different than any other obstacle he’s faced.
