Carter Walton showed up in Los Angeles in 2013 as a sharp, gorgeous patent attorney with his whole heart on his sleeve, and daytime has been stomping on that heart in a fresh new way every single year since. He fell for Maya, proposed, and got dumped for Rick before the ring even had time to lose its shine, watching her walk away with the man she’d actually wanted the whole time. He rebuilt himself with Zoe, got engaged, and watched her fall for his own best friend Zende while he was busy planning centerpieces and picking out a venue.

Somewhere in between all of that, he had an affair with Quinn that blew up two separate engagements and left him the guy everyone quietly blamed instead of the guy everyone comforted, even though heartbreak clearly had a hand in every one of those decisions.

Then came Paris, who left him at the altar because Quinn crashed the wedding to declare her love mid-vows, which is somehow not even the most humiliating way this man has been jilted in front of an entire church full of witnesses. Katie fizzled out so fast the show barely bothered to explain it, treating an entire relationship like an afterthought.

And when he finally, finally got Hope Logan to say yes, Liam faked a brain tumor and sent her running back to her ex before Carter could even pick out a honeymoon destination, let alone walk down an aisle that actually finished.

Then He Married Daphne, and Even That Wasn’t Safe

For a hot minute, it looked like the universe finally owed Carter Walton one. He and Daphne got married, painted a nursery, picked out a crib, and dared to dream about building an actual family after over a decade of daytime using his heart as a chew toy. It should have been the one storyline where this man finally got to be happy.

Instead, Daphne got a devastating diagnosis that shattered their plans for a baby, and as of this week, she’s telling Carter she’s questioning their entire marriage and heading back to Paris. Carter is standing in his own office watching his wife walk away while he begs her to stay, insisting she’s what he wants and that they can figure out alternatives together, and none of it is landing because her heart is somewhere he cannot reach right now.

The writers are out here acting like this is a shocking twist instead of the eleventh time they’ve done this exact thing to the same man, and we are formally out of patience.

Why Does It Always Have to Be Carter?

We need to talk about the pattern here, because this is not bad luck anymore, this is a full-blown character assassination with a law degree attached. Carter Walton is smart, loyal, gorgeous, and endlessly willing to put other people’s happiness ahead of his own, and every single time the show hands him something worth keeping, it finds a new way to snatch it back within a season, like clockwork, like it’s contractually obligated.

Compare his track record to literally anyone else on this canvas who gets to fall in love, mess it up, and try again without the entire universe conspiring against them, and it starts to feel personal. Ridge has been married approximately one billion times on all of The Bold and the Beautiful and keeps landing on his feet, ex-wives lining up to give him another shot. Carter can’t even keep a fiancée through a full commercial break, let alone a season.

Enough Is Enough, Bold and the Beautiful

At some point the writers need to let this man have one uncomplicated, undramatic, boring win, because watching Carter Walton get his heart broken has stopped being compelling and started being genuinely exhausting to witness, season after season, engagement after engagement.
