GIO PALMIERI IS TAKING EMMA TO BROADWAY AND THE GENIE IS COMING TO PORT CHARLES

TL;DR: General Hospital is crossing over with the Broadway production of Disney’s Aladdin. Gio Palmieri and Emma will visit Michael James Scott, who plays the Genie, in New York City on April 24, and Scott will repay the favor with a trip to Port Charles on May 4 where he will perform “Friend Like Me” at The Savoy. This is happening. On our soap. We are not okay.

Port Charles Is Going to Broadway

Gio Palmieri is whisking Emma away to New York City for a romantic trip, and it is not just any trip. Entertainment Weekly exclusively announced that General Hospital will be crossing over with the Broadway production of Disney’s Aladdin in a series of episodes stretching from late April into early May.

Giovanni Mazza, who plays Gio, and Braedyn Bruner, who plays Emma, will head to New York on the April 23 episode and reunite with Michael James Scott on April 24. Scott, who has played the Genie in Aladdin on Broadway since 2019, is an old friend of Gio’s from his days playing violin in a Broadway orchestra pit.

Scott will then make the trip upstate to Port Charles on the May 4 episode, where he will take the stage at Curtis Ashford‘s club, The Savoy, and perform a jazzy rendition of “Friend Like Me,” the showstopper originally made iconic by Robin Williams in the 1992 animated film.

General Hospital is crossing over with Broadway’s Aladdin and we are already counting down the days. What song would you want to hear at The Savoy? Send your picks to [email protected] and we just might feature them!

A Bit of Disney Magic

The crossover is a natural fit. General Hospital has called ABC home since the show premiered on April 1, 1963, and Disney acquired the network in 1995. Aladdin is based on the 1992 animated feature that is considered one of the high points of the Disney Renaissance, and the Broadway production celebrated its 12th anniversary on March 20 at the New Amsterdam Theatre, where it has been housed throughout its entire run.

The musical currently stars Rodney Ingram in the title role, Sonya Balsara as Jasmine, and Dennis Stowe as Jafar, alongside Scott as the Genie. Scott has also appeared on series including The Carrie Diaries and is currently playing Nurse Dubois on the revived 10th season of Scrubs. He will make his final appearance as the Genie in Aladdin on May 3, which makes his trip to Port Charles on May 4 one of the very first things he does after taking his final bow.

A Milestone Wrapped in a Milestone

The timing of this announcement carries extra weight. Wednesday marked General Hospital‘s 63rd anniversary on the air. The show is the longest running television soap opera still in production, sitting just nine years shy of the record set by Guiding Light’s 72 year run across television and radio from 1937 to 2009.

Sixty three years on the air. A crossover with one of the most beloved musicals on Broadway. A Genie singing “Friend Like Me” at The Savoy. Gio Palmieri and Emma on a romantic trip to New York City. This is the kind of event that reminds you why General Hospital has lasted more than six decades and why it keeps finding new ways to surprise us.

Port Charles is getting a whole new world. And we are ready for every note of it.

A devoted Days of Our Lives stan and Beyond the Gates enthusiast, Ashley watches all five soaps religiously — yes, even when her cats are demanding attention, which is always. When she’s not dissecting Salem’s latest scandal or theorizing about what the Duprees are up to now, Ashley can be found curled up with a cozy book, knitting something she’ll probably never finish, and being an unapologetic stay-at-home cat mom. Her feline overlords have yet to develop an interest in daytime drama, but she’s working on it.Let the record show: Ashley is Brandon Barash’s biggest fan.
