Two soap deaths, two very different afterlives. Dr. Doug McBride died tragically and stayed that way, while Cameron Kirsten has been killed, resurrected as a hallucination, and somehow turned into an Emmy-nominated comedy along the way. If either ghost deserves a real comeback, it is not the one who never got the chance to be entertaining.

Dougie’s Death Was Tragedy, Full Stop

Dr. Doug McBride never got a chance to be funny in death, because his death was never played for laughs to begin with. He was drugged and killed in a fiery car crash, orchestrated by Joey Armstrong, while his own wife Vanessa McBride was in bed with Joey when the news came in. Bill Hamilton, who had known Doug since college, could not fix this one, and the show never treated it like anything other than the gut punch it was.

That tragic framing means Doug never got the chance Cameron eventually did to become anything fun. There has been one afterlife thread: his daughter Deanna McBride has reportedly been seeing and visiting with dead Dougie, but that arc has stayed rooted in grief, not comedy. Doug is technically still around in some form; Fairmont Crest simply has not let him have any fun with it yet.

Cameron Turned Death Into a Bit

Cameron Kirsten, meanwhile, has had a completely different afterlife. Sharon Newman stabbed him to death after he tied Faith to a bomb, and that should have been the end of it. Instead, dead Cameron came back as a hallucination egging Sharon toward chaos, then came back again, and somehow made himself the most entertaining thing on screen in the process.

Linden Ashby, who played Cameron, actually earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Performance for that hallucination work, real recognition for a character who was supposed to be gone for good. He also reportedly wore the same bloodstained shirt for weeks straight, which honestly sounds like a better Halloween costume than most actual costumes people buy. That kind of detail is exactly why Dead Cameron works; the show leaned into the absurdity instead of tiptoeing around it.

What If Dead Doug Does the Same Thing to Vanessa

Here is the pitch worth considering. Doug already has a foothold in the afterlife through Deanna, so BTG has all the groundwork it needs to expand that into something bigger. If Y&R can get away with dead Cameron gaslighting Sharon from beyond the grave, why not let dead Doug do the same thing to Vanessa? Not simply grief-driven visits with his daughter, but the exact same unsettling, entertaining chaos Cameron Kirsten brings to Sharon.

Vanessa already carries plenty of guilt over what happened the night Doug died. A dead Doug hallucination playing on that guilt would give BTG the same kind of dark comedy Y&R has been mining successfully with Cameron Kirsten, a dynamic fans have already praised as more entertaining than the character ever was alive, and it would finally give Doug’s death the chance to become something more than simply tragic.
