Let Us Talk About Mrs. Martinez

Mrs. Martinez is the backbone of the Abbott Estate, and has been for longer than most people in Genoa City have been paying attention. She cooks extraordinary meals the family references constantly but never appears on screen to receive credit for. She takes care of Harrison Locke when the Abbotts are otherwise occupied, which is frequently, because they are always otherwise occupied with something that takes priority over the child in their care.

She is played by no one but known by everyone, the most reliably present absent character in Genoa City, and she earned every ounce of that reputation in that kitchen.

This week, Jack Abbott kicked Traci Abbott, Kyle Abbott, and Harrison out of the Abbott house so Patty Williamscould move in. Fans have been asking a lot of questions about that call. We have one very specific one.

The Abbott Estate Under New Management

Here is what she is dealing with right now. Patty has moved into the Abbott house. The woman complicit in Diane Jenkins‘ kidnapping is now sleeping in Diane’s house and eating from Diane’s kitchen, presumably expecting the same service the family has enjoyed for years.

Does Patty know how to operate that kitchen? Does she know the schedule, what time breakfast is served, or any of the thousand invisible details that have been managed off screen with zero acknowledgment?

Jack made a unilateral decision to hand his house to Patty, and nobody in that conversation was the one person who actually runs it. She would have had thoughts. She deserved a conversation she did not get.

Harrison Locke and the Room Service Pancakes

Now let us talk about Harrison, because this is where it gets funny and pointed at once.

He has been relocated to the GCAC with Kyle while the Abbott house hosts Patty. He is in a hotel suite with Lucy Romalotti, Daniel Romalotti‘s daughter, who is also off screen, because the Abbott family’s approach to childcare has always been to find someone invisible and trust them with the most important people in their lives.

Kyle finally mentioned Harrison this week. Via phone call. From downstairs in the lobby. Harrison called down to ask if he could have pancakes for dinner, and Kyle’s answer was that is what room service is for.

That is the parenting. The Abbott heir is in a hotel suite eating room service pancakes for dinner while his grandmother is kidnapped, his grandfather handed his home to the woman who arranged it, and his father is downstairs being Kyle about everything.

The housekeeper would have known what that boy wanted before he asked. She would have had something home cooked on a proper table. She has never once suggested room service was a substitute for an actual meal.

The Most Reliable Person Here Is Invisible

Here is the part this whole mess has made impossible to ignore. In a household full of people making catastrophically bad decisions, the one who has never made a bad call is the one nobody thinks about until the meals stop appearing and the child needs someone to talk to.

Jack did not think about her when he handed his house to Patty. Kyle did not think about her when he ordered Harrison room service for dinner. Nobody in this family thinks about her until they need something, and then they praise her cooking and continue not giving her a single scene.

She has cooked every meal, cared for every child, and kept every secret this household has had. Right now on The Young and the Restless, she is either still showing up to cook for Patty out of professional dedication, or she is home finally getting the rest she deserves. Either way, nobody asked her. And that is the most Abbott thing that has ever happened in Genoa City.
