The Hallway Gets Very Crowded

This Y&R Canadian Day-Ahead opens with the world’s worst walk of shame. Kyle Abbott steps out of a motel room and straight into Matt Clark, while Victoria Newman freezes on the other side of the door with her ear pressed to it like a safecracker. Matt immediately starts in on the Newmans, and Kyle reminds him he’s lucky to be out of legal trouble. Then Matt asks what an Abbott is doing at a dump like this. Kyle’s answer? A work meeting. At a motel whose ice machine has seen things.

Matt doesn’t buy it, and before Kyle can make his exit, Phyllis Summers strolls up wondering the exact same thing. Kyle tries the “you two deserve each other” dodge. Phyllis and Matt counter by asking if he’s selling lipstick door to door. Bold new Jabot sales strategy.

When Matt learns Phyllis was once Kyle’s mother-in-law, he wonders if everyone in this town is related. Sir, you have no idea. He’s practically giddy imagining the Newmans and Abbotts wiping each other out, blissfully unaware that a Newman and an Abbott have been doing the exact opposite a few feet away.

Once Kyle escapes, Matt diagnoses him as “feeding an addiction.” Phyllis rules out drugs and decides Kyle must be tailing Matt to track down Patty Williams. Close, Red. Matt’s addiction theory was closer.

Phyllis Summers Says Goodbye the Long Way

Phyllis fills Matt in on her heart-to-heart with her son, Daniel Romalotti. When she asked how he’d feel if she left town, Daniel admitted he loves her and wants her to stay. Matt agrees Daniel is right and offers to get out of her “remarkably attractive hair” for good. Nothing like a compliment on your way out the door.

Phyllis begs him once more not to skip town with the psycho. Matt swears he’ll “deal with Patty” once he gets her out of Genoa City. When Phyllis warns he could be Patty’s next victim, he tells her she’s hot when she worries about him. Reader, it works. Into bed they go.

Afterward, Phyllis asks him to handle Patty and come back. Matt gushes that she’s brilliant and stunning, and predicts some stud will sweep her away the moment he’s gone. Phyllis insists he’s wrong. She’ll miss him, and nobody has ever made her feel as seen as he does. Cue the encore.

When Phyllis wakes up, the other side of the bed is empty. Matt is gone, and all he left behind is his cap. She slips it on and declares, “Till we meet again, Matt Clark.” Somewhere, the entire population of Genoa City is knocking on wood that “again” never comes.

Diane Jenkins Sharpens Cupid’s Arrow

Over at the Abbott mansion, Jack Abbott greets Diane Jenkins with a martini, and she greets him with Vibrante gossip. Nothing’s official yet, but the Jabot staff is already buzzing and upping their game. Jack vows to withhold judgment on Vibrante, knowing the topic sets his wife off. Diane gives that vow a very short shelf life.

Once she promises to tolerate the whole thing, Jack admits he’d like to ease the tension with Nikki Newman. Diane, on the other hand, plans to crush her. It’s business, not personal. Totally. Completely. Swear.

She’s launching a counter-campaign, Jack has his doubts, and Diane insists she’s protecting their edge. The mission? Make sure Vibrante’s Valentine’s Day debut becomes a Valentine’s Day massacre. Roses are red, and so is the ink Diane wants on Nikki’s balance sheet.

Victor Newman Makes a Very Casual Promise

At the ranch, Nikki shows Victor Newman her logo work. She loves the letter “V” for Vibrante, and she wants it in ALL CAPS, because nothing about this launch is whispering. Victor is impressed she’s pulled so much together in a few days and refuses to weigh in, since he has complete faith in her.

When she asks him to promise he won’t use the company to hurt Jack, Victor delivers a shrug and a “Yeah.” Get that notarized, Nikki. She thanks him for keeping his opinions to himself and celebrates that they’re finally coming out the other side of their woes. Victor tells her to knock on wood, and mostly they’re grateful to have their son back.

Enter Victoria, who admires the logos while Nikki decides to sleep on the final call. Then Victor asks where his daughter disappeared to, since he called the office and she was nowhere to be found. Victoria babbles about her day and how well her brother seems to be settling in at work, and Nikki can’t help noticing how energized she looks. Mom, please don’t ask why. When Kyle calls, Victoria insists it’s spam and bolts faster than you can say “extended warranty.”

Nick Newman Gets High on Email

At Society, Nick Newman lines up plans with Christian Newman for later, then runs into Sharon Newman while she waits on takeout. He’s buzzing about his first day back and every email he had to read. “Feeling back,” he raves, is an insane high. Sharon points out that drugs can’t hold a candle to reality. No inbox has ever felt so appreciated.

Sharon has missed the old Nick. He’s sorry the pills consumed him and blinded him to everything, and she insists none of it was his fault. It was all Matt. Nick won’t take that out. He gave himself permission to go down that dark road, and he has to own it. Sharon counters that nobody chooses to become an addict.

Then she asks about “that Marie woman.” Casual, Sharon. Very casual. Nick explains that Marie Kirkland went back east to be with her family, and Sharon hopes she gets her life on track. In return, Sharon serves up the family news: Mariah Copeland is back at work and her baby is a total bundle of joy, while Faith Newman went on a date but seems far more smitten with business ethics. Romance is clearly thriving in that household. Nick offers to reach out to Noah Newman and shares his plan to stay steady, starting with asking Jack to be his sponsor. They hug goodnight.

Later, Victor and Nikki phone Nick to hear all about his productive day. He loved it, they’re proud of him, and Nikki declares that everything is finally back to normal. Clearly nobody has told her about the Valentine’s Day massacre.

Kyle Abbott Scouts a New Location

Back at the tack house, Victoria plays Kyle’s voicemail and calls him back. Does Phyllis know? Kyle doubts it. Victoria wants to warn her dad that Matt is still lurking in town, but Kyle points out that would mean explaining how she knows. “Hi, Dad, funny story about the motel…”

Kyle is relieved the close call didn’t scare her off. In fact, he wants to change things up. His surprise now includes a brand-new meeting spot, location classified. Victoria can hardly wait. Here’s hoping this place has thicker walls and fewer Matt Clarks.
