Those Words Mean Something Different When Marlena Says Them

When a normal person says “I don’t feel like myself sometimes,” you offer them tea and sympathy. When Marlena Evans says it on Days of Our Lives, you start checking for yellow eyes and growly voices.

Our beloved Doc sat in Sarah’s office, got a clean bill of physical health, and then casually dropped the most terrifying sentence in Salem history: “I don’t even feel like myself sometimes.”

MA’AM. With YOUR history?! You can’t just SAY things like that!

For those who need a refresher — and honestly, how could you forget — Marlena Evans has been possessed by the literal devil not once, not twice, but MULTIPLE times throughout her tenure in Salem. Satan himself looked at all the people in the world and said “that one, she’s my favorite” and kept coming back for more. She’s levitated. She’s spoken in demonic voices. She’s terrorized the entire town while inhabited by the Prince of Darkness.

So when this woman says she doesn’t feel like herself? We don’t reach for the tissues. We reach for the holy water.

To Be Fair, She IS Grieving

Now look, we’re not COMPLETELY unhinged. We understand that Marlena just lost John Black, the love of her life. Grief does terrible things to a person. Feeling disconnected from yourself after losing your soulmate is completely normal and expected.

But this is Salem. And this is Marlena. And “normal” left the building approximately forty years ago when the first possession happened.

The logical explanation is that Marlena is simply struggling with grief and needs time to heal. She’s pulling back from work, only doing part-time at the hospital, and processing the loss of John in her own way. That’s healthy. That’s reasonable. That’s what any therapist would recommend.

The Salem explanation is that Satan is warming up in the bullpen, ready for another round with his favorite psychiatrist, and “I don’t feel like myself” is the first warning sign of an incoming possession storyline.

We know which option makes for better television, and we also know which option has us sleeping with one eye open.

The Devil Really Does Love Marlena

Here’s the thing that kills us: out of all the people in Salem — a town FULL of sinners, schemers, and morally questionable individuals — the devil keeps choosing Marlena Evans. The compassionate psychiatrist. The loving grandmother. The woman who has dedicated her life to helping others.

Satan really said “I want THAT one specifically” and has made it his mission to possess her repeatedly throughout the decades. At this point, Marlena should have a frequent flyer card for demonic possession. A punch card where the tenth possession is free.

And now she’s vulnerable. She’s grieving. She’s admitted she doesn’t feel connected to herself. If the devil were looking for the perfect opportunity to slide back into his favorite vessel, THIS WOULD BE IT.

We’re not saying it’s definitely happening. We’re just saying that if Marlena starts craving deviled eggs and speaking Latin, nobody should be surprised.

Salem, Keep Your Eyes Open

We love Marlena Evans with our whole hearts. She’s the heart of Salem. She’s helped countless people through their darkest moments. She deserves peace and happiness and a grief journey that doesn’t involve any supernatural entities.

But we’ve also been watching this show long enough to know that peace and happiness are temporary states in Salem, and Marlena has a giant target on her back that apparently only Lucifer can see.

So we’re going to keep watching. We’re going to keep our holy water handy. And every time Marlena says something like “I don’t feel like myself,” we’re going to clench so hard we might strain something.

It’s probably just grief. It’s PROBABLY just grief. But in Salem? You never know.
