Beyond the Gates
Finding a BTG Fan Who Actually Cares About Barbara Mitchell Is Rarer Than Spotting Bigfoot
BTG fans really cannot connect with Barbara Mitchell, and Leslie Thomas is still spending like her mother’s trust fund never ran dry.
LESLIE THOMAS IS SPENDING BARBARA MITCHELL’S MONEY, AND NOBODY’S ASKING WHY
Barbara Mitchell died by suicide long before Beyond the Gates even began, and fans are discovering it is nearly impossible to emotionally invest in a character they never actually got to watch. Leslie never knew her own mother growing up; the trust fund tied to her name is no longer even being funded, and Leslie is still spending like the well never ran dry. Finding a BTG fan who genuinely cares about Barbara herself, rather than what her death means for Leslie’s bank account, might be harder than finding Bigfoot.
A Character Nobody Actually Met
Barbara Mitchell exists entirely in the past tense. She was a founding member of the Articulettes decades ago, pushed out of the group, and she died by suicide long before the current Fairmont Crest storylines ever began. Fans never got a single scene with her alive. Everything they know comes secondhand, through Anita’s guilt and through Leslie’s discovery of who her birth mother actually was.
That distance is exactly why so many fans admit they cannot bring themselves to care about Barbara as a person. She is a name attached to a tragedy and a fortune, not someone viewers ever spent time with. Leslie Thomas herself never knew her either. Peaches raised her from infancy, and Leslie grew up with zero connection to the woman whose trust fund eventually changed her entire life.

The Money That Should Have Run Out By Now
Here is where things stop making sense. Anita Dupree quietly built that trust fund for years, using money Barbara would have earned had she stayed with the group, and she did it anonymously without knowing who would eventually inherit it. Once Leslie’s parentage came out, Anita stopped funding the trust entirely. The money Leslie already had was hers to keep, but nothing new has been going in since.
And yet Leslie Thomas keeps spending exactly like nothing changed. She bought property across from the Duprees, she has thrown money around constantly, and by any reasonable math, a trust that stopped receiving new deposits should be running dry by now. Somehow it never does, and nobody in Fairmont Crest seems the least bit curious about how that math actually works.
Bigfoot Might Be the Easier Find
Ask any BTG fan about the Leslie and Barbara storyline, and the conversation almost always turns to Leslie Thomas’s fortune, her spending, her attitude, or her ongoing feud with Anita. Ask that same fan how they feel about Barbara specifically, the woman who actually died, and most come up empty. It is not that fans are cold. It is that Barbara was never given the chance to be a real presence on screen.
A Backstory That Never Got the Chance to Land
That gap between what the plot wants viewers to feel and what viewers can actually feel is the real story here. A character who exists only through other people’s guilt and other people’s inheritance checks was always going to struggle to land emotionally, no matter how tragic her actual backstory is.
Do you think BTG will ever slow down long enough to give Barbara a real emotional moment? Sound off in the comments below.
The Ledger That Still Doesn’t Balance
Barbara Mitchell’s death set an entire storyline in motion, yet almost nobody watching actually feels connected to her as a person, and Leslie Thomas’s spending habits still do not add up now that Anita has cut off the funding. A BTG fan who genuinely cares about Barbara herself might be rarer than an actual Bigfoot sighting.
