But let’s be honest — this wasn’t exactly a surprise. Jan Morgan has been Derek Baldwin’s biggest cheerleader since Beyond the Gates debuted back in February 2025. The woman might as well have been wearing an “I Heart Derek Baldwin” sandwich board while ringing a bell through the streets of Fairmont Estates.
Meanwhile, Jan is supposedly dating a man named Owen whom she met on a recent cruise. And her daughter, Nurse Ashley, is completely over Derek and attempting “Take 2” of moving on — this time with the sexy new lab tech who appeared out of nowhere at Garland Memorial.
Ashley and her mom are basically BFFs. So is it about to get painfully awkward between them?

Who doesn’t love Jan Morgan (Jerri Tubbs) on Beyond the Gates? She couldn’t be more sweet if she tried. This is the woman who let Eva Thomas (Ambyr Michelle) talk her into giving her unhinged mother, Leslie Thomas (Trisha Mann-Grant), a second chance. Leslie’s ex-bestie Mona Wilson (Karan Kendrick) doesn’t have time for that nonsense, but eternally cheerful, glass-half-full Jan absolutely does.
Jan just returned from her cruise with new boyfriend Owen in tow. She’s been chatting up everyone who will listen about her fabulous new man. But here’s the thing — has anyone actually met Owen? Her daughter and BFF Ashley (Jen Jacob) hasn’t. Her bestie Mona hasn’t. Her rebooted gal pal Leslie hasn’t.
So is Owen already out of sight and out of mind for Miss Jan? Beyond the Gates fans know Derek Baldwin is very much in sight — and almost always on her mind.
How to Make Ashley and Derek Less Boring? Insert Jan
Now THIS is something fans can get behind — finally making Ashley interesting! How do you accomplish that? Have Ashley’s mom, who obviously adores Derek, start dating Derek.
Let’s be real: Ashley had one job on this show, and it wasn’t doing Derek. It was revealing Hayley Lawson’s (Marquita Goings) fake miscarriage — and she still hasn’t completed that task. So let’s spice things up between Jan and Derek instead.
This will drive Nurse Vanilla absolutely nuts, give Derek an actual storyline worth watching, and inject some much-needed soapiness into this show just in time for its first anniversary.
