Remember When Naomi Hawthorne Was That Girl?

We’re coming up on one year of Beyond the Gates on February 24th, and we need to talk about what happened to Naomi Hawthorne. When this show launched, Naomi was everything. A bad-ass attorney with a sexy detective husband. A woman who took zero crap from anyone. She was ready to drag her own father into court on behalf of women who had been sexually harassed by his former partner, Mike.

That Naomi? She was fierce. She was formidable. She was the kind of woman you root for.

This Naomi? She’s lying to literally everyone she knows and hasn’t seen the inside of a courtroom since the pilot episode. Does Naomi even have an office anymore? Soap fans see Naomi’s office about as often as we see Sharon Newman’s Cassidy 1st office on Y&R, which is to say never.

From Nearly Fighting Her Father in Court to Absolutely Nothing

Let’s recap how far Naomi Hawthorne has fallen. When Beyond the Gates began, her father Bill Hamilton was dead to her. He cheated on her mother Dani Dupree with Naomi’s best friend Hayley Lawson. Then he married Hayley. The betrayal was layered and delicious.

When women from Bill’s law firm came to Naomi about being sexually harassed by his ex-partner, she was THIS close to facing off against her own father in court. Attorney versus attorney. Daughter versus daddy. It was going to be spectacular.

And then? Nothing. The ladies settled. They still work for Bill. And Naomi hasn’t been involved in a single legitimate court case since. The writers gave us a powerhouse attorney and then forgot she was an attorney at all.

Now She’s Just a Professional Liar

Here’s where it gets truly frustrating. Naomi has lied to everyone she knows. Her husband Detective Jacob Hawthorne? Lied to his face. Her mother Dani? Lied. Her immediate family? All lied to. The only person who knows the truth is her best friend Nurse Ashley Morgan.

What’s the big secret? Naomi is carrying the same cancer gene as her mother. She doesn’t actually have cancer. She may or may not develop it down the road. But instead of sharing this with the people who love her, she’s been keeping it locked up tight.

The irony is delicious and infuriating. Naomi feels perfectly fine lying to her husband about a cancer gene, but she’s out here running her mouth all over Fairmont Crest about Jacob’s undercover assignment as a detective for Metro police. Make it make sense.

Something Is About to Blow Up

The clock is ticking now. Jacob’s undercover cover is going to get blown because Naomi can’t keep her mouth shut about his work while simultaneously keeping her mouth shut about her own health. Everyone she lied to about the cancer gene is going to find out. It’s just a matter of which disaster strikes first and how badly the Dupree family gets caught in the crossfire.

We just want to know one thing. Can we please get Naomi Hawthorne back in a courtroom where she belongs? Give this woman a case. Let her be fierce again. Because right now, she’s been reduced to a liar with a secret and a husband she’s about to get killed, and that’s not the Naomi we signed up for.
