Days Of Our Lives
Ryan Gosling Grew Up Watching Deidre Hall Get Possessed on Days of Our Lives and Now He Wants to Visit Her in Salem
Ryan Gosling called Deidre Hall his OG acting inspiration over Brando and De Niro and accepted her invitation to visit the Days of Our Lives set.

DEIDRE HALL INVITED RYAN GOSLING TO SALEM AND PROMISED THE DEVIL WOULDN’T GET HIM
TL;DR: Ryan Gosling praised Days of Our Lives and Deidre Hall on a podcast, called her his original acting inspiration over Brando and De Niro, and Hall responded with a video inviting him to visit the set. Gosling accepted with an enthusiastic yes, told her he would be there any time and anywhere, and joked that he would say a Hail Mary before arriving just in case anyone gets possessed.
It Started on a Podcast
Deidre Hall has played Marlena Evans on Days of Our Lives since 1976, and in that time she has been possessed by the devil twice, kidnapped more times than anyone can count, and delivered some of the most demanding performances in daytime history. This week, she found out that one of the biggest movie stars on the planet has been watching the whole time.
Ryan Gosling appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote his new film Project Hail Mary and the conversation turned to television. Gosling did not hold back. He said soap opera actors do not get the love they deserve, that they memorize ten pages of dialogue the night before, get one take, and are handed impossible scenarios. Then he got specific. He talked about watching Hall get possessed by the devil in the famous 1995 storyline and being struck by how good she was. He called her a great actress and said having to act possessed seemed like a lot to ask of somebody. He eventually stopped watching the show, but years later he caught an episode and there she was, possessed again. His exact words were that somehow his life keeps crossing the path with when Deidre Hall is possessed.
Ryan Gosling visiting Salem is the crossover nobody expected and everybody wants. If you could cast him in any role on the show, who would he play? Send your wildest casting ideas to [email protected] and we just might publish them!
Hall’s Response Was Pure Deidre
Hall saw the podcast and did what only she could do. She recorded a video, addressed both Gosling and Horowitz by name, then paused to introduce herself to Horowitz since he admitted he was not familiar with Days of Our Lives. The cast played the podcast in the dressing room and the makeup room and Hall said they were thrilled to be acknowledged because they work really hard.
Then came the invitation. She told Gosling it would be nice if he wanted to come over and see what they do in their neck of the woods. She called it an open invitation to visit the set. And she closed with the line the entire internet is quoting. Nobody will be possessed, she promised. And if they are, she would keep an eye on him. Horowitz posted the video and could not believe what happened. He wrote that he did not have getting dragged by Hall on his bingo card this week.
Gosling’s Response Made the Internet Lose Its Mind
Gosling responded with his own video, posted by his wife Eva Mendes on Instagram. He opened by saying “Deidre Hall, are you kidding me?” He called it a very enthusiastic yes to a very cordial invitation. And then he said the thing that charmed every soap fan. He said he would be there to thank Hall in person for being his OG acting inspiration. It was not Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront. It was not De Niro in Taxi Driver. It was Deidre Hall in Days of Our Lives.
He told Hall that any time she tells him, he’ll be there. He thanked Horowitz for being a magical guy who helped make it happen. And he closed with one final joke, saying he was not worried about the possession because he would say a Hail Mary before he gets there and he would be fine. The cast of Days of Our Lives flooded the comments. Alison Sweeney, Eric Martsolf, Brandon Barash, and Robert Scott Wilson all responded with love. Wilson suggested Gosling would fit right into the Kiriakis family. Hank Northrop, who plays Liam Selejko, pitched a character named Gyan Rosling, whom he described as a jazz loving demon hunter with Kenergy.
No visit date has been announced. Due who cares? Deidre Hall invited Ryan Gosling to Salem and he said yes. And somewhere in the dressing room at the Burbank Studios, the entire cast of Days of Our Lives is still playing that podcast on repeat.
Not Brando. Not De Niro. Hall. Do you think Ryan Gosling should actually appear on the show? And what kind of character would you want to see him play? Sound off below because this comment section is about to be legendary!
WATCH THIS: Maybe we could pair him with Abigail…
@soapoperamag The Pod Games Aren't Over Yet! EJ outright told us there are more poeple in pods and I'm hoping one of them is Abigail. Could that discovery be what brings Chad back to Salem? I would love that. I miss her so much! #DAYS #DOOL #DaysofOurLives ♬ original sound – Soap Opera Magazine
