The Patient Who Changed Everything

A young woman named Destiny walks into Salem’s free clinic and tells Sarah Horton she took some old pills she found in the back of her medicine cabinet. Sarah treats her based on what she presents. The diagnosis is wrong. Destiny dies.

That is already a tragedy. Then JJ Deveraux tells Sarah that Destiny had a history with narcotics, and suddenly a medical misfortune becomes something else entirely. Sarah is not a woman who walks away from that kind of information. She starts pulling the thread.

What she finds when she pulls it is a dead sister. Destiny’s sister died two years ago of an overdose. And hovering around the edges of that case, close enough to notice, close enough to matter, was a name Salem has been hearing a lot lately. Liam Selejko.

The Man Behind the Check

Liam Selejko just keeps showing up. He has been presented as a troubled young man from a rough background, a petty criminal who has taken money from Salem’s finest to do unscrupulous things – especially involving the DiMera’s – he maintains he didn’t understand. He’s working through a plea deal literacy program because of his poor choices, and he became Arianna Horton‘s unlikely love interest. That is, until her mother, Gabi DiMera, bought him out of her daughter’s life. Of course Ari doesn’t know this. But it took a $150,000 check and Julie Williams serving as accomplice (she signed off to transfer his literacy program) to get Liam to leave town.

The check was Gabi’s attempt to control a situation she found inconvenient. What she did not know, what nobody in Salem has fully reckoned with yet, is what Liam may actually be. If Sarah’s investigation confirms that Liam was connected to the drug supply that killed Destiny’s sister two years ago, then Gabi DiMera did not write a check to get a boy out of her daughter’s life. She wrote a check to a drug dealer. And that check has her name on it.

Brady Black Gets a Phone Call

Sarah does not go to Rafe with this. She goes to Brady Black. That choice matters. Brady has his own history with addiction and loss, and his own reasons to want the drug supply in Salem exposed. When Sarah Horton lays out what she found, the connection between Liam, Destiny, and a two-year-old overdose that closed too quietly, Brady starts making calls.

The investigation that follows is not going to stay narrow. Drug operations in Salem never do. Every thread Sarah pulled on leads somewhere and the somewhere in this case leads directly back to a check written on DiMera money, handed to a man now connected to narcotics deaths in this city, signed by Gabi DiMera.

Ari in the Middle

Arianna Horton is Gabi DiMera’s daughter and she is also the granddaughter of the original Arianna Hernandez, who died because of drugs in Salem years ago. The symmetry is not subtle. Ari has been getting closer to Liam all spring. Gabi tried to end it with money. And now Sarah Horton is uncovering evidence that the man Ari has feelings for may have been connected to drug deaths in this city before he ever walked into her dorm room.

When Ari finds out about the check she will be furious at Gabi. When she finds out what the investigation turns up, she will have to decide what she actually knows about the man she has been defending. Salem has a long and painful history of daughters discovering their mothers were right about the wrong people for exactly the wrong reasons. This summer may be Ari’s turn to live that story.
