The Road from Brad Carlton to Dollar Bill Spencer! Don Diamont Opens Up About His Firing from Y&R and Landing at B&B
Don Diamont opens up about his sudden, unceremonious exit from Y&R and how it eventually led him right to B&B stardom as Bill Spencer.
B&B’S DON DIAMONT WALKED DOWN ONE HALLWAY, AND IT CHANGED EVERYTHING
TL;DR: Don Diamont opened up on the Soapy podcast about his journey from being fired at Y&R to becoming a beloved star on B&B.
From Days to Y&R to a Legendary Run
Don Diamont has one of daytime’s great origin stories, and he opened up about the whole wildย arcย on the Soapy podcast, from an early firing to landing the role that would define his career. Before B&B, his soap journey actually began on Days of Our Lives, where he had a rocky start. In the same week, he was fired from the show and voted Best Newcomer.
It was Y&R creator Bill Bell Sr. who saw his work on Days and personally reached out to have him tested for a role on Y&R, launching a run that would last roughly 24 years playingย Brad Carlton. In a fun full-circle detail, Don Diamont revealed his Y&R character was actually named after Brad Bell, Bill Bell’s son, who would go on to play a major role in the next chapter of his career.

The Hallway Walk That Changed Everything
That long run on Y&R came to an abrupt end the day before Thanksgiving, in a meeting he described as sudden and unceremonious after so many years on the show. Rather than go home and process it, he did something bold. He walked straight down the hall to Brad Bell’s office at B&B and asked if Brad had a few minutes to talk. Brad was floored to learn his old friend had become available, and only a few months later, he created the role of Bill Spencerspecifically for Don Diamont.
The rest, as they say, is daytime history. He has played Bill Spencer, affectionately known to fans as “Dollar Bill,” for years now, turning what could have been a career setback into one of the most beloved roles in soap opera history. It is a reminder that sometimes the hardest days end up leading somewhere even better than where you started, and Don Diamont’s story is proof of exactly that.
