JERE BURNS HEADS TO GENOA CITY AS DR. LAURENCE MARKHAM

TL;DR: Jere Burns is making his daytime debut on The Young and the Restless in the newly created role of Dr. Laurence Markham, beginning Monday, June 15. The multi-episode arc lands at the peak of the Diane Jenkins mystery and reunites Burns with longtime sitcom co-star Susan Walters.

A Primetime Veteran Heads to Daytime for the First Time

The Young and the Restless is pulling a heavyweight from outside the daytime world. Jere Burns, who has spent decades anchoring primetime ensembles, is heading to Genoa City for a multi-episode run as a brand new doctor named Laurence Markham, beginning Monday, June 15.

The news, broken by TV Insider, marks a daytime first for the actor. After more than a hundred screen credits across drama, comedy, and prestige television, Burns has somehow never stepped onto a soap canvas until now. Y&R landed the milestone.

Most recent viewers will recognize him from Hulu’s Death and Other Details and his recurring role on CBS’s FBI. His resume reads like a tour through the last forty years of American television, and he is bringing every ounce of it into Genoa City at exactly the right moment.

Got hot takes about who Dr. Laurence Markham really is, how he is connected to Diane Jenkins’s disappearance, and whether he is friend or foe in the unfolding mystery? Send your wildest theories to amber@soapoperamagazine.com and we’ll share the best ones with the SOM community!

A Sitcom Reunion Three Decades in the Making

The role comes with a heartwarming bonus for soap fans paying attention. Burns will be sharing scenes with Susan Walters, and the pairing is a working reunion more than three decades in the making. The two co-starred on the NBC sitcom Dear John during its 1988 to 1992 run, and they have apparently not shared a set since.

Walters told the outlet, “I loved working with Jere Burns on Dear John,” and described the experience of being back across from him as a thrill. Her enthusiasm reads loud and clear, and it sets up real expectations for the chemistry that is going to land on screen.

The Diane Jenkins Mystery Heats Up

Dr. Laurence Markham steps in at the perfect chaotic moment. Diane Jenkins, the character Walters has anchored on Y&R for years, has been a Genoa City ghost for weeks now. The marriage to Jack Abbott imploded earlier this spring after Patty Williams slipped Jack a drug on behalf of Victor Newman, and Diane discovered her husband in a compromising situation with his ex-wife.

The fallout was severe. Diane left the Abbott mansion and went silent. Her last verified Genoa City appearance was a May 14 voicemail to Jack in which she walked the line between her hurt and her hope for the marriage. Nothing since.

The lingering question on the canvas is whether Diane vanished by choice or whether one of Patty Williams’s schemes pulled her under. With Burns stepping in as Dr. Laurence Markham, the show has signaled that the answers are not only coming, they are arriving in the form of a multi-episode story arc built to unravel the mystery in real time.

The Beyond the Gates Crossover Twist

Eagle-eyed fans will also notice that Diane is technically showing up this week on Beyond the Gates as part of the major crossover between the two shows. The two soaps run on different production calendars, which is why Diane is currently both happily attending Martin Richardson’s fundraiser in Fairmont Crest and also a missing person back home in Genoa City. Soap math at its most chaotic.

Walters herself winked at the dual reality when she spoke about Diane’s BTG presence, hinting that her character was looking around and considering her options at the event. The wink was loud, and Genoa City fans caught it.

What to Expect From Dr. Laurence Markham

Who Dr. Laurence Markham actually is to Diane has not been revealed. He could be a therapist she sought during her time away. He could be a doctor treating her in a way she did not choose. He could be someone connected to Patty’s schemes or someone with his own agenda entirely. Jere Burns has the range to play any of those reads with full conviction.

What the casting absolutely confirms is that the writers are not allowing the Diane storyline to fade out. They are escalating it with a major guest player who can carry serious dramatic weight, and the bonus reunion energy with Walters is going to land for a whole subset of viewers who grew up with both actors on their TV sets.

Welcome to daytime, Jere Burns. Catch the debut of Dr. Laurence Markham on Y&R starting Monday, June 15.
