JOSH GRIFFITH EXITS AS Y&R HEAD WRITER IN A MAJOR SHAKEUP

TL;DR: Josh Griffith, the seven-time Daytime Emmy winner who has guided Young and the Restless for years, is stepping down as head writer. He stays on for now, with no successor named yet.

What Josh Griffith’s Exit Means for Y&R

Buckle up, Genoa City faithful, because a major change is coming to the creative team behind your favorite soap. Josh Griffith, the seven-time Daytime Emmy winner who has steered Young and the Restless for years, has decided to step down as head writer. The news was first confirmed in an exclusive report from TV Insider.

According to the report, the show’s cast and crew were informed earlier today. For longtime fans who have followed every twist out of Genoa City, this marks the end of a defining era and the start of a brand new chapter. It is the kind of behind-the-scenes shakeup that ripples across an entire canvas.

Make no mistake, this is a big one. Josh Griffith has been one of the most influential voices in daytime, and his fingerprints are all over the stories Y&R fans have devoured. His decision to step away from the head writer post signals a real shift for the show heading into the rest of 2026. Head writers shape the heartbeat of a soap, from the slow-burn romances to the explosive reveals, so a change at the top is felt in every storyline.

For now, Griffith continues in the role, so there is no sudden cliff. There is also no word yet on who will be tapped as his successor, which leaves plenty of delicious speculation on the table. You can dig into more on the show and its current direction through ongoing coverage of all things Genoa City.

A Career Woven Through Daytime History

Griffith’s resume reads like a tour of soap history. He began his daytime tenure in 1988 as a writer on Santa Barbara. Three years later he was named associate head writer of One Life to Live, before a promotion to co-head writer alongside Michael Malone in 1992.

After earning a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team in 1994, he departed the ABC soap the following year. In 1997, he teamed with veteran General Hospital writer Robert Guza Jr. to co-create Sunset Beach, the first and only daytime drama produced by Aaron Spelling, which ran on NBC until 1999. It was a bold swing that showed his range far beyond a single show.

Deep Roots in Genoa City

His connection to Y&R runs deep and goes back nearly two decades. Griffith joined the show in 2006 as a writer and soon added co-executive producer to his duties, before leaving in 2008. He returned briefly from 2012 to 2013, then moved to Days of Our Lives in 2015 as co-head writer through 2016.

Griffith came back to Genoa City in 2018 as supervising producer. Following the departure of then-head writer Mal Young, he was promoted to head writer in 2019 and later added executive producer to his plate in 2023. Last month he stepped down as executive producer, with Sally McDonald taking over those responsibilities, allowing him to focus on writing alone.

The Stories He Promised Fans

Even on his way out, Griffith leaves a tantalizing trail behind him. In a recent preview of his plans for 2026, he teased that the goal was to keep the momentum going, promising an exciting, suspenseful, and romantic stretch ahead for the show.

He described the months to come as packed with intrigue, mystery, suspense, and love, with a few fun surprises up his sleeve. Whoever steps into his shoes will inherit a canvas humming with possibility, and fans will be watching closely to see how the transition plays out. For Josh Griffith, it is the close of a remarkable run, and for fans of the genre, the next chapter is only beginning.
