PHYLLIS SUMMERS IS BURNING DOWN THE FAMILY SHE SWEARS SHE WANTS BACK

TL;DR: Phyllis Summers slept with Matt Clark and handed him a job, all while insisting she wants her fractured family back. Nick Newman keeps trying to warn her, and Phyllis is not listening to a word of it.

Nick Newman Is the Only One Sounding the Alarm

Phyllis Summers has spent a long time saying she wants her family whole again, and somewhere along the way that goal got completely buried under her growing devotion to Matt Clark. She slept with him. She handed him a job. She has become, functionally, the president of a fan club for a man nobody else in Genoa City actually trusts, and every step she takes deeper into that relationship is a step further away from the family she claims to be fighting for.

It is not a subtle contradiction either. It is happening in plain sight, week after week, while the people who love her watch it unfold from the sidelines.

Nick Newman has been trying to get through to her, and Phyllis is not having any of it. That alone should tell you something. This is not a man with no history here suddenly deciding to have an opinion out of nowhere. Nick has reason to be cautious around a man with Matt’s past, or lack of one, and Phyllis waving him off like he is simply being dramatic is exactly the kind of denial that tends to blow up spectacularly a few episodes later, usually at the worst possible moment.

Phyllis Cannot Have It Both Ways

Here is the problem with the story Phyllis is telling herself. You do not rebuild a fractured family by pouring yourself into a man that half the people who love you do not trust, giving him a job, and sleeping with him before anyone has answered the real questions about who he actually is. Fans have watched Phyllis fight for her family before, and she has never been afraid to burn things down to get what she wants, but this particular fire looks like it is going to take her family down with it instead of clearing a path back to them.

Nick is not the villain in this story for raising concerns. If anything, he is doing exactly what someone who actually cares about Phyllis should be doing right now, and the fact that she cannot hear it says more about where her head is than anything Matt himself has done. Wanting your family back and actively choosing the one relationship guaranteed to alienate them further are not compatible goals, and Phyllis cannot keep insisting she wants both while only ever making choices that serve the second one. At some point the pattern stops looking like bad luck and starts looking like a decision, and everyone around her seems to have noticed that shift except Phyllis herself.

Do you think Phyllis Summers is going to realize what she is doing before it costs her everything, or is Nick Newman wasting his breath? Tell us in the comments below.

Our Take: Phyllis Needs to Pick a Lane

Phyllis has spent years fighting for her family, and she deserves credit for never giving up on them. But this is the first time it genuinely looks like she is choosing something else entirely and calling it the same fight. Matt Clark is not a bridge back to her family. He might be the reason that bridge never gets built at all, and somebody needs to say that to Phyllis Summers before Nick Newman is the only one left saying it.

So which way does this land? Does Phyllis wake up on her own, or does it take losing another Newman for good before the penny finally drops? Is Matt playing her, or has she talked herself into something nobody made her do? Come settle it with us on our Facebook page.
