Smitty’s Mom Comes to Town

Smitty spent the morning doing math nobody wants to do, and the math said his husband’s poll numbers were sinking. He ordered Martin Richardson onto the campaign trail. Martin, a man who could talk himself into believing a hurricane was a light drizzle, predicted the whole mess would fade the moment the town found something shinier to gossip about, and anyway, fresh leaflets were on the way. Smitty ordered him to go kiss babies. Martin agreed on one condition: a hot curry waiting at home as his reward.

The second the front door closed, Smitty pulled out a burner phone, a sentence nobody wants to see about their spouse’s brownstone, and left a message for Max asking him to back up his story. Then he started writing his memoirs, because nothing says “I am not a suspect” like drafting the autobiography early. Into this scene of gentle spiraling walked his mother, Jenny, straight from Ohio.

She explained that Smitty’s dad had been dying to join her but his boss refused to spare him, and that the Duprees’ money and power made him squirm, which is the most relatable review of Fairmont Crest ever delivered. Jenny was certain her son would be cleared. Smitty confessed he felt awful about possibly costing Martin his career, all because he had been chasing a Pulitzer. His mother reminded him she had quit her own career to raise him, he thanked her for it, and he admitted he loved his kids and his bylines in equal measure but could not seem to hold both at once. Jenny called it a small speed bump, told him he had every right to chase his dreams, and praised his brains. It is the kind of pep talk only a mother can give a man currently facing a drug-induced homicide charge.

Meanwhile, Martin got cornered in the atrium by a woman named Miss Admonia, who regretted voting for him because the man she voted for shared a bed with a killer and could not manage his own household. He had braced himself for a policy debate. A stranger called Mr. JB stepped in and said she had no business dragging the man that way, and that he would proudly cast his vote for Martin even if the husband had murdered some lady, an endorsement with an asterisk big enough to sink a campaign. Miss Admonia stalked away, and Mr. JB shook Martin’s hand and urged him toward his own truth.

Martin finally headed home and was startled to find Miss Jenny sitting beside her son. She promised the family would get through this together, and the three of them piled into a group hug. For one whole minute in a week of leaks, leaflets, and burner phones, nobody in that brownstone was alone.

Will Jenny’s visit keep Smitty steady, or does the pressure only build from here? Email us your take at amber@soapoperamagazine.com, we want to hear it.

Jacob and Naomi Air Everything

Jacob Hawthorne walked in on his wife enjoying a romantic comedy, the kind of cozy scene that can only exist in a soap right before something explodes. Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne narrated the plot, they shared earbuds like teenagers, and for roughly four minutes the Hawthorne house was a greeting card.

Then Jacob admitted he could not stop thinking about Smitty’s arrest. Naomi suggested he go hunting for proof that Smitty had been framed. He reminded her that she had told her own client to say nothing, which meant neither of them could discuss the case, a rule they proceeded to ignore with gusto. She said he was coming at it from the wrong direction. He countered that her client was not necessarily spotless, and that manslaughter was a real possibility.

Naomi bristled at his tone about her relatives, and the dam cracked. Jacob unloaded: her clan kept pulling levers out of sight to wriggle out of legal trouble, he was tired of constantly compromising, and she always asked him to keep quiet about it. She got to be upset, apparently, but he did not. Naomi wished he had said so ages ago, because now there was nothing she could fix. Stunned to find blind spots in her own marriage, she floated couples therapy. Jacob insisted everything was fine now that it was out in the open, and they went right back to the movie, proving the least realistic thing on that screen was the idea the argument was over.

Eva, Kat, and the Wedding DJ

Kat Richardson bumped into Andre Richardson while at the club, griping about organizing the wedding alongside Eva Thomas, a team-up forced on them by Shanice Johnson. Her biggest complaint was Eva’s pick for a DJ, an Instagram personality with no proof he had ever worked a room. They agreed that Dani had weathered the drama with her composure intact and had never stepped over the line, and Kat hoped Shanice would keep her dad relaxed. Then the conversation drifted to the possibility of Smitty going to prison. Andre begged her not to dwell on it. Kat wondered whether she should be working to prove Smitty had been framed, and Andre warned that she could not pick apart Jacob’s investigation without seeing the evidence. Her answer was to use Izaiah Hawthorne for information.

Izaiah, meanwhile, was busy at Uptown with Eva, who grumbled that Kat had vetoed the event planner she favored. He hoped the sisters could get past the tension, then reminded Eva it was the anniversary of the day they met, when borrowing her pen turned out to be the best decision of his life. He had tried to convince himself she could be a friend, and she had tried to keep things casual, until both of them realized they were in deeper than that. He ordered chocolate sodas. Eva was so charmed she wanted to send a photo to her mother, and Izaiah would rather she did not, which says a lot about what Leslie would do with a sweet photograph.

He warned that the night was about to get corny, then told her she was the best thing that had ever happened to him. Eva toasted to the man who saved her life and admitted no relationship of hers had ever lasted this long. Right on cue, Kat popped up asking for a word with Izaiah, fresh from announcing her plan to squeeze him for information. The couple said it was their anniversary, she left, and Eva thanked him for the rescue.

Dani Preps for Her Close-Up

Pamela Curtis strolled into Dani Dupree’s house with a reminder that the big sit-down was the next day. The goal was to sell Dani as a glamorous model with a gorgeous young husband, which is a wonderful way to describe a marriage she swore only yesterday was better than ever. They raided the closet and debated looks until Dani modeled one that made her agree she looked spectacular.

Pamela added that Andre would face the questions and the cameras too, so Dani promised to talk him into it, and they started hunting for a look to complement hers. Once Pamela left, Andre came home and heard the plan from his wife. He agreed to everything and said he would put on a burlap sack if it kept Pamela content, which is a lovely sentiment from a man who had no idea his accessory status was in the headline.

Fairmont Crest Holds Its Breath

Fairmont Crest spent the day collecting family, and not all of it arrived with good news. Smitty got a mother and a hug while Martin got a lecture and a stranger’s questionable endorsement, Jacob and Naomi discovered their rom-com had a second act, and Kat and Eva fought about a DJ while Izaiah tried to keep everyone fed. Dani and Andre set about polishing the picture of a perfect pair for the cameras. On Beyond the Gates, every photo shoot is one flash away from a scandal.
