According to the paperwork Billy pulled from the Chancellor archives, that money was a formal deal with Katherine Chancellor‘s husband Phillip, not a handshake favor between friends. If the debt went unpaid for twenty years, ownership passed to John or his heirs. Billy says he had the documents authenticated, and no record of repayment has turned up. Jack looked them over and admitted they seem real.

So the claim itself may hold water. What Billy is doing with it is where this gets ugly for anyone still keeping score in Genoa City. Billy thinks he owns Chancellor because his lawyers say the John Abbott loan agreement was never terminated and never repaid, which by its own terms hands the company to John’s heirs. In the episode airing Monday, already seen north of the border, Lily Winters fires him and tells him to clear out. Either John forgave the debt or he let a friend keep her company, and both readings flatter the father. The reputation on the line belongs to the son waving the paperwork.

If I know these writers, Billy Abbott wins this round before he loses the war. By the end of next week Victor Newman is set to launch a plan to shred his credibility, Lily is turning to Jack for help, and Cane is building an alliance of Abbotts against an Abbott. Billy has been here before, holding a prize he could not keep, and this time he wrapped it in his father’s name.

John built Jabot, raised four kids, and forgave more than his share of sins. He did not spend his last twenty years hunting down a widow’s company on a technicality. If Billy truly wanted to honor the man, he would have put that contract on the Abbott table in front of Jack, Traci, and Ashley and asked what their father would do.
