Instead, she made the most gut-wrenching choice imaginable — she sat Nathan down, told him she loved Damian Spinelli more, formally closed the door on their marriage, and sent him back into the world a free man.
Which is exactly why it is so stunning — even to Maxie’s most devoted supporters — that the same woman who freed Nathan is now standing in front of her lifelong best friend delivering these words: “That changes how I feel about us.”
Lulu Spencer has conducted herself with remarkable grace through all of this. She stepped back from her feelings the moment Maxie woke up. She gave Maxie every unobstructed opportunity to reclaim her family. She went to Maxie directly, with honesty, before anything even developed. She did everything right. And the reward for all of that patience and loyalty is Maxie ripping the one remaining anchor out from under her — their friendship.
General Hospital fans are fiercely divided right now, and honestly, that split makes complete sense. Maxie’s pain isn’t manufactured. She came out of a coma to find a world that didn’t wait for her. Her ex-husband is alive and already emotionally attached to her best friend. The psychological vertigo of that landing all at once would flatten most people. But being in pain doesn’t automatically make you right. And right now, Maxie Jones is walking dangerously close to a line she will not be able to walk back across.

The Friendship That Survived Everything — Until Now
Maxie and Lulu have outlasted Faison, Stavros Cassadine, a devastating bomb at the Floating Rib, comas, presumed deaths, and every variety of Port Charles catastrophe imaginable. This is not a casual friendship — it is a foundational, generational bond that fans have watched carry both women through their darkest moments. Watching it fracture over a love triangle, even one this complicated, lands differently than your average General Hospital blowup.
Reading between the lines, this may not actually be about Nathan at all. Maxie Jones woke up from her coma to find that everything had quietly continued without her. Spinelli built a life. Nathan built a genuine connection with Lulu. The world she expected to return to simply doesn’t exist in the shape she left it. Could it be that she isn’t actually furious at Lulu for pursuing Nathan — but is instead grief-stricken over realizing she no longer fits neatly into her own story? Because if that’s what’s really happening beneath all this fury, it is genuinely heartbreaking to watch.
That said, don’t be surprised if this gets considerably worse before it gets better. The moment Lulu knocked on that door at James West‘s home and walked straight into an already combustible situation, the writers placed all three points of this triangle in the same room at the same time. Something is going to detonate. And if history is any guide, the explosion will force Maxie to look in the mirror and reckon honestly with how far she has let her anger carry her — and what she has destroyed in the process.
