Victoria Newman and the Nerve of Her

If you have been watching The Young and the Restless lately, you have heard the name Summer Newman more times than you can count. Summer this, Summer that, Summer needs to come home, Summer could help and yet Summer Newman herself has not been anywhere near Genoa City.

For a character who is apparently the solution to everyone’s problems right now, she is doing a remarkable job of being completely invisible. At this point, fans could make a drinking game out of every time someone drops Summer Newman’s name on screen and they would not make it through a single episode sober.

Let’s start with Victoria Newman, because this is where things get really rich. Victoria has been pushing the idea of flying to Milan to recruit Summer to the Newman side to help take back Newman Enterprises from Phyllis Summers. On the surface, that might sound like a reasonable plan, except for one small detail. Victoria Newman was perfectly fine with her daughter, Claire Newman, getting involved with Kyle Abbott, Summer’s ex-husband.

Victoria had zero hesitation about that situation. So now she wants to show up in Milan and ask Summer to go to bat for the Newman family? Why exactly would Summer lift a finger for Victoria Newman after that? The answer is she wouldn’t, and Victoria should already know that.

Phyllis Already Tried and Got the Door Slammed in Her Face

Phyllis flew all the way to Milan to see Summer, and Summer didn’t let her in. Her own mother. Phyllis Summers, who never takes no for an answer and who has bulldozed her way through every obstacle Genoa City has ever thrown at her, got shut out by her own daughter. That is a statement. Summer is not hiding in Milan, she is making a choice, and everyone back in Genoa City keeps acting like she is just waiting to be convinced by the right person.

Nick Finally Said What Needed to Be Said and That’s Saying Something

Credit where it is due. Nick Newman has apparently put his foot down and said to leave Summer out of this entirely. Now here is what makes that even more remarkable. Nick has been hopped up on pain pills, all over the place, and frankly, not operating at his sharpest lately. So the fact that the most sensible thing anyone in Genoa City has said about Summer came from Nick Newman in his current condition says everything about how badly everyone else is handling this. Summer is clearly not interested in being anyone’s chess piece right now, and Nick, pain pills and all, is the only one who seems to respect that. Victoria could learn something from her brother.

Will We See Summer Before Summer?
