Beyond the Gates Recap September 8, 2026: Jacob Hawthorne Turns Detective on Smitty Over Lia Whitmore’s Death

Jacob Hawthorne Grills Smitty Smith Over Lia Whitmore’s Death

This Beyond the Gates recap opens at Orphie Gene’s, where Ashley Morgan finds Jacob Hawthorne staring off, both of them still stuck on Lia Whitmore‘s death. Jacob admits the suicide ruling doesn’t sit right with him, arguing that a woman who ran an entire red plasma ring wouldn’t crack that easily behind bars. Ashley worries the finger could point at Grayson Perez, but Jacob tells her not to go there, and she quietly confesses she’s fallen for him. Jacob promises her he has it handled, and that Derek Baldwin will not have died for nothing.

At home, Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne is relieved she and Jacob finally talked things out after her visit to his father, but her relief doesn’t last. Jacob explains he had to question Smitty today since he was Lia’s last visitor, and he can’t look past that simply because Smitty is family, a line that leaves Naomi visibly rattled.

Over at the Brownstone, Martin Richardson flips through old photo albums with Smitty, both of them getting sentimental over Tyrell Richardson heading off to college, and Martin admits he’s already run background checks on Tyrell’s new roommates. Smitty gets emotional thinking about Lia, and Martin forces some chamomile tea into him before Naomi bursts in to warn them what’s coming.

Jacob arrives and is thrown to find his own wife standing up as Smitty’s attorney, while Martin calls the whole situation ridiculous. Once the recorder is running, Smitty insists he only visited Lia as a reporter chasing a story, but Martin and Naomi keep talking over him until he snaps the recording off and demands to know why Jacob is doing this to his own family. Smitty asks flat out if this is now a murder investigation, and when Jacob ends the interview without a real answer, Smitty pushes harder, wanting to know if Jacob actually believes Lia was killed. Elsewhere in this Beyond the Gates Recap, Jacob only repeats that the investigation is ongoing before walking out, leaving Martin to accuse him of not knowing where his loyalties lie and peddling conspiracy theories against his own husband.

Anita Dupree Finally Bows to Leslie Thomas’s Demands

At the Dupree Estate, Sharon Winger reads Anita Dupree a glowing review alongside Tracy Tyler, both hoping Anita will be back on stage with them soon thanks to Vernon Dupree‘s efforts, humidifier and all. A text from the hospital board group chat pulls the mood down fast, comparing the crisis around Lia’s suicide to what happened to Barbara, and the women fondly remember how loudly Barbara used to laugh before insisting she deserves better than what she got.

Anita still won’t budge on giving Leslie Thomas a producer credit, and when Vernon reports that Leslie flatly refused their offer, Anita fumes. Sharon tells her to swallow her pride, and though Anita insists she’s lost her mind for even considering it, Sharon and Tracy remind her that their own group helped turn Leslie into this nightmare in the first place by how they treated Barbara. Anita storms off, declaring she’ll put an end to this once and for all.

Back at the Club, Anita catches Leslie right as she’s stomping away from Ted and startles her by agreeing to her terms after all, though Anita has conditions of her own, chiefly that Leslie keeps her mouth shut during the actual recording sessions. Leslie agrees, and Anita can’t resist a parting lecture about everything Leslie’s gotten since she arrived in town, warning her she’ll reap exactly what she sows.

Shanice Johnson’s Brothers Declare War on Ted Richardson

At Garland, Ashley finds Shanice Johnson distracted, worried sick about what happens when her brothers finally meet Ted Richardson face to face. They spot Ted, who claims an emergency and bolts, while Monica Jackson joins them fully convinced Shanice’s brothers won’t sit around waiting nicely for anyone.

Across town at the Club, Cedric Johnson and Lamont Johnson size up the fancy room and grumble about driving ninety minutes for it, assuming their sister’s boyfriend is somehow fronting the whole production. While they wait, Leslie corners them, correcting their assumption that she’s Nicole by insisting she’s no “frigid zombie,” and admitting she and Ted had an affair. The brothers write her off as a jealous woman with an axe to grind, certain Shanice never would have looked twice at the man Leslie’s describing.

Ted finally shows up apologizing for being late, and the moment the brothers connect him to Leslie, they turn ice cold, calling him a deadbeat and a clown before storming out entirely unconvinced by his claim that Shanice already knows all about his past. Back at Garland, Ted returns to Shanice and admits her brothers clearly have beef with him, and she tells him they’ve already fired off the angry emojis to prove it, though Ted swears he’s determined to win them over.

Jacob is caught between the badge and the family that raised him, and there’s no version of this investigation that lets him walk away clean. Anita handed Leslie exactly what she wanted, which means the woman with nothing left to lose now has a permanent seat at the table. Meanwhile, Ted’s past finally caught up with him in the worst possible room, and Shanice’s brothers aren’t the forgiving type.
