Steve Johnson turns up at the penthouse, tells Marlena Evans they tracked down Marino’s birth certificate, and hands her his phone. She reads the father’s line out loud. It says Stefano DiMera.

Then she starts on the mother’s line and stops dead. The reel cuts to black right there, and that is where every published account of it ends. None of it has streamed yet, so treat the whole scene as a spoiler rather than something Salem already knows.

The part that makes it land has been building since August. Marlena asked Steve at the pub on August 28 to find out who was feeding Belle Black clues in Italy. By September 16 he and his Black Patch partner were pulling on Marino instead and coming up with almost nothing, no criminal record, no social media, a man who barely leaves his own island. The single transaction he did not bury inside a shell company was the Kiriakis house, which both investigators read as Marino wanting to be found. Days of Our Lives Spoilers: Bo Brady and Hope Brady Rock Steve Johnson on Friday

Friday, September 25 hands Steve the other half of his week. Bo Brady and Hope Brady, both long gone from Salem, reach him with news the grids call unsettling and one of them says will rock him outright. What the news is, nobody has published. Steve has spent three weeks chasing a man nobody can photograph, and Salem’s last mystery man slid Stefano’s ring onto his own finger without ever showing his face, so the timing is doing a lot of work.

The rest of Friday is Salem catching its breath. Gabi Hernandez and Philip Kiriakis decide the relationship is worth another go. Chad DiMera welcomes Kate Roberts to The Spectator, which should age him a decade by Christmas. Sarah Horton and Kayla Johnson land on the same conclusion, that somebody has been playing dirty, though no spoiler says what the two of them think they have found.

Does the birth certificate name Dominic Marino’s mother on Days of Our Lives?

No, and the cut is the whole point. Marlena gets as far as the word mother and the picture drops out. Every account of that reel agrees on where it stops and not one of them reports a name. If you read a piece this weekend that told you who she is, you read a guess with a headline sitting on top of it.

She has been surfacing pieces of Stefano’s island since early September, a Celtic knot etched on a blanket among them. On September 18 she looked at a 1992 photograph of Stefano with a small blond boy, did not know him, and said out loud that Marino and DiMera both mean of the sea. Nothing published connects Friday’s dream to the certificate.

My gut tells me the paperwork and the chessboard are the same clue. Salem has spent three weeks following duplicate chess sets, a hidden photograph and a ring on a stranger’s hand, and nobody has put that beside the certificate yet. Reading between the lines, this trail was laid to be found, the way that palazzo in Italy sat open and unoccupied with the evidence waiting in a drawer. If I know these writers, the mother’s line does not get answered this week.
