Beyond the Gates
ORDER UP, EMMY VOTERS! Jasmine Burke Is Serving Beyond the Gates’ Best Performance From Behind That Diner Counter
Jasmine Burke earned her Daytime Emmy nod as June Hughes on BTG, and she deserves to beat the rest of the Outstanding Guest Performer field.
JASMINE BURKE EARNED THIS DAYTIME EMMY, AND SHE’S NO GUEST
TL;DR: Beyond the Gates’ June Hughes is up for Outstanding Guest Performance at the Daytime Emmys, and Jasmine Burke should win hands down. She’s up against Y&R’s Ray Wise, GH’s Jeff Kober and Eva LaRue, and Days’ Christopher Sean. Winners get named October 30. Check the BTG spoilers while you wait, and then tell us how June is still a “guest.”

From Tent City to the Emmys
June Hughes walked onto Beyond the Gates living in Tent City, arrested for assault after a run-in with a social worker. She had lost her kids to CPS during her addiction years before. Most soaps would have used her once and moved on.
Instead, June Hughes fought her way back. She got sober, accepted housing, and took a job waitressing at the diner. She survived pneumonia, heart bypass surgery, and a beating that put her in the hospital. Now she’s a Daytime Emmy nominee. That’s a comeback.
BTG scored 15 nominations in its very first year, and this might be the one that means the most.

Why Jasmine Burke Should Win Hands Down
We love everything about June’s character development. Jasmine Burke plays every inch of that grit without asking for pity. You never feel sorry for June. You root for her.
The best part is how June won back her kids. Tyrell Richardson and Samantha Richardson were raised by Martin Richardson and Smitty. June didn’t storm in demanding to be Mom. She earned it slowly. Samantha started coming to her for advice, and Tyrell forgave her at Christmas.
Quiet Moments, Loud Talent
That kind of slow-burn redemption only works when the actress sells every quiet moment, and Burke never misses. One look across the diner counter tells you more than most characters say in a week.
And she does it while the writers keep parking her behind that counter. Holding your own with Martin, Smitty, and the Richardson kids on limited airtime takes real talent.
She’s Not a Guest to Us
Can we talk about this category for a second? June isn’t a drop-in. She has a full arc, her own family, a job, a near-death experience, and a front-row seat to the Impaler mess. She even warned Smitty about the Impaler before anybody took it seriously.
Then Heather Armstrong strolled into the diner, and June, being June, chatted away about who was working the case. Nobody pays attention to the waitress, which is exactly why June hears everything.
Put Her on Contract Already
That’s not a guest. That’s a core character the show hasn’t put on contract yet. BTG, fix that. If Burke takes home this Emmy, there’s no excuse left.

The Competition
Let’s look at who she’s up against. Ian Ward is Y&R’s resident cult creep, and Ray Wise is back chewing the scenery. Cyrus Renault and Natalia Rogers-Ramirez bring the GH firepower, and Paul Narita represents Days.
They’re all solid. Ray Wise is a legend, and Jeff Kober has made Cyrus one of GH’s scariest villains. But legends and villains are easy to notice. June is the kind of performance that sneaks up on you and stays. None of them had a story like hers.

Team June Is Not Backing Down
June Hughes should win this one hands down. Jasmine Burke earned it, the fans know it, and October 30 can’t come soon enough. And BTG, while you’re at it, put this woman on contract.
