The Young and the Restless
Y&R Hot Take: Nice Try, Daniel Romalotti, but Your Daughter Is Almost 18 Doesn’t Need YOUR Permission to See Her Granny!
Daniel Romalotti is unemployed and blocking Phyllis Summers from Lucy. Lucy is almost 18. The clock on this power play is ticking loudly

DANIEL ROMALOTTI IS UNEMPLOYED AND STILL THINKS HE GETS TO BLOCK PHYLLIS
TL;DR: On The Young and the Restless, Daniel Romalotti has decided that his mother Phyllis Summers does not get access to her own granddaughter Lucy. Daniel is currently unemployed, directionless, and dating a married woman. The irony is extraordinary. Lucy is almost 18. The clock on Daniel’s little power play is ticking very loudly.
Daniel Is Using Lucy, and He Knows It
So, Daniel Romalotti does not want his almost-adult daughter, Lucy Romalotti, hanging out with his mother, Lucy’s grandmother, Phyllis Summers. Good try, Daniel. You are literally unemployed and are dating a married lesbian. Daniel is worried about Phyllis’s influence, while his own life choices are a whole other conversation. Lucy’s mother is dead, and she is going to need someone other than you.
Regardless of any of Phyllis’s faux pas, she adores her granddaughter and only wants to be there for her. So, Daniel, it is time to chill and here are all the reasons why.
Let’s be direct about what is happening here. Daniel Romalotti is not protecting Lucy. Lucy does not need protecting from her grandmother. Phyllis Summers has her flaws, nobody is arguing otherwise, but she is not a threat to her granddaughter.
What Daniel is doing is using Lucy as a bargaining chip in his ongoing complicated relationship with his mother. Every time Phyllis does something Daniel disapproves of, Lucy becomes a little less accessible. Every time Daniel wants to make a point, Lucy is the point he makes it with. That is not parenting. That is manipulation dressed up as parenting.

Y&R’s Lucy Romalotti Is Almost 18 and She Gets a Vote
Here is the part that Daniel seems to be conveniently ignoring. Lucy Romalotti is not a small child who needs to be shielded from complicated family dynamics. She is almost 18 years old. She is old enough to have opinions, make decisions, and determine for herself what kind of relationship she wants with her grandmother.
The Young and the Restless has a habit of keeping children conveniently young or conveniently absent when it suits the plot, but the timeline on Lucy is pretty clear. She is practically an adult. At some point, and that point is coming very soon, Lucy gets to decide for herself whether she wants Phyllis in her life. Daniel does not get to make that call forever.
Phyllis Summers Deserves Better Than This on Y&R
Here is where the sympathy lands squarely with Phyllis. Whatever she has done, whatever chaos she has created over the years, Phyllis Summers loves her family. She loves Daniel even when he makes it nearly impossible. She loves Lucy in the way grandmothers love grandchildren, completely and without reservation. Being kept at arm’s length from her own granddaughter by a son who is currently unemployed, directionless, and not exactly operating from a place of moral authority is genuinely hard to watch. Phyllis has earned a lot of things in Genoa City. Being cut off from Lucy is not one of them.
Y&R Fans: Should Lucy Decide for Herself?
The clock is ticking on Daniel’s ability to control this situation. Lucy is almost 18, and Genoa City has a long history of young adults making their own choices, whether their parents are ready or not.
So we are asking you: should Lucy Romalotti get to decide for herself whether Phyllis is in her life, and how long before she does exactly that, whether Daniel likes it or not? Sound off below!
