The Abbotts Meet Baby Ruby

Sally Spectra carried baby Ruby through the door of the Abbott Mansion and received a welcome usually reserved for visiting royalty. The family informed her that the house belonged to her legacy now, which is a heavy word to hand a woman running on newborn sleep. Sally, who began her life in a carnival, took it in with the dazed grace of someone who has been handed a castle’s worth of relatives.

The ladies took turns fussing over Ruby and checking on Sally, who answered every question while staring at her daughter as though the baby might vanish if she blinked. Somebody predicted that Ruby would have no trouble wrapping Billy Abbott around her tiny finger. Given Billy’s history with women who have him figured out, nobody asked for evidence.

It meant the world to Sally that these people wanted in on her life, and Traci Abbott made it official by declaring Sally family, along with Coco Spectra and Shirley Spectra. The Abbotts adopted three Spectras in a single sentence, which is faster than anything in Genoa City has ever moved. Diane Jenkins added a promise that the family would show up whenever Sally needed them, a vow of reliability from a woman who once staged her own death. Sally was floored that anyone would hand her something so big, and what that says about her expectations of rich families is better left unexamined.

Dinner steered the conversation to the situation with Jill Abbott. Sally confessed she could not give Billy the support he needed from where she sat, and the table assured her that staying with Ruby was the right call. What troubled her most was the weight the strain might put on her husband, along with the decisions he could make while hurting. Everyone at the table hoped Jill and Billy could lay their grievances down, if only briefly.

Kyle’s Excuse Wears Thin

In London, Victoria Newman found Kyle Abbott staring out the apartment window, wide awake and jet lagged. His idea was a night on the town. Hers involved considerably less clothing and considerably more locked doors. They kissed their way through a post-mortem on how close Billy had come to catching them, and then Kyle swept her off to the bedroom, which settled the question of dinner reservations. Afterward, the pair wandered back out for water, Victoria announced she needed sleep to be sharp for her early business, and Kyle, still buzzing like a man who has never heard of melatonin, went out alone.

He strolled into a London bar, and Cane Ashby found him within moments, a coincidence that must be statistically rare in a city this size. Kyle explained that he was passing through town to visit a pal before moving along to Paris, and Cane accepted the story the way you accept a coupon that expired last spring.

The talk drifted to Jill, and how hard the waiting had been on Billy. Cane’s theory was that Billy secretly feared her recovery, because getting better would mean he and Jill finally had to look their demons in the eye. Kyle understood more than he let on. He had once mourned his mother as dead, made his peace with it, and then watched her walk back in, and a parent you cannot trust makes every other person harder to trust. Cane pointed out that Kyle had moved past it, and Kyle agreed, adding that he was glad she was around again.

Both men worried that pride might keep Billy and Jill apart. Cane argued that illness has a way of shrinking grudges, and said his own father, flaws and all, had left him with a sense of closure that improved him as a man. They raised a glass to peace for Jill and Billy, and right on cue Billy walked in and asked what Kyle was doing there. The layover story had maybe three seconds to live.

Claire Puts Audra on Notice

Claire Newman bumped into Audra Charles at Society and opened with polite questions regarding the wedding and the newborn, a warm-up that lasted about as long as a sip. Then she accused Audra of leaning on her mother Victoria about the patents. Audra called it ordinary business.

Audra fired back by asking how Claire had managed to scare off Holden Novak, and Claire wanted to know why Audra was so fixated on the fellas in her orbit. Audra floated the theory that Holden was hiding behind Malcolm Winters to keep his distance, decided the two were finished, and informed Claire that he deserved better. Claire corrected the record: no breakup. She added that she had cracked the secret Audra brought home from L.A., grabbed her takeout, and made for the exit holding a to-go bag and a very interesting piece of information.

Audra turned defensive, which Claire read as fear, and Audra grumbled that the unhinged old Claire had resurfaced. That comment made Claire want to wreck her life, and she announced that her silence would carry a cost. Then came the order to leave her alone. Claire was tired of hearing from Audra, and if Audra did not keep her distance, the secret would get out.

Phyllis Declares War Over Cocktails

Phyllis Summers crashed Nick Newman and Victor Newman at the GCAC with an offer of cocktails before the fighting started, which is the most civilized way imaginable to announce a corporate invasion. She said she knew Victor ran by his own rulebook and so did she, and that she planned to aim straight for the top. As proof of intent, she pointed out that Arabesque’s name now sat on the tower opposite their own. Victor was unmoved, saying slick logos and chest-thumping do not amount to success. Nick wondered whether she realized she was repeating a mistake.

Phyllis would not reveal trade secrets, and Victor claimed he already knew her plans. She conceded the focus would be property and hotels, and that she was planning a hotel facing the one the Newmans were eyeing. Victor said he competes to win and generally pulls it off, and Phyllis said she does too, an agreement that guarantees one of them is wrong.

The moment Victor stepped away for a phone call, Nick and Phyllis went another round. She missed the days before he turned so judgmental, and he urged her to be realistic, since anyone who challenges the Newmans loses. Phyllis wanted all or nothing. Nick pointed out that she had Daniel Romalotti back and Matt Clark gone, and those were wins enough. She asked about Matt, and Nick told her that Matt had admitted himself to a clinic and wanted no visitors. Phyllis wished to hear how he was faring, but Nick said she could not help him and should put her energy into the people still in her life.

Daniel arrived as Nick walked off, asking what fresh crisis had his mother wound up. She was sick of everyone doubting her, and it felt like the whole town was lining up to knock her down. She decided the Newmans must be nervous and drew energy from the thought. Arabesque, she vowed, would do more than beat Newman. It would annihilate them. Daniel, who signed on for a legitimate job, got a front-row seat to the mission statement.

Over at the ranch, Nick promised Victor that he would keep trying to reach Phyllis. Victor hoped his son would not wake up one morning to find she had done something he could not forgive, which is the closest Victor comes to worrying out loud.
