ANITA WARMS UP IN THIS BEYOND THE GATES RECAP

TL;DR: This Beyond the Gates Recap catches Anita Dupree declaring herself ready to record again, Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne calling her marriage to Jacob Hawthorne a lost cause, and Smitty packing a bag for Mexico. Martin Richardson doubts his own campaign slogan, and Leslie Thomas volunteers to throw a party nobody ordered.

Anita’s Comeback Begins With Scales

Fairmont Crest has survived arrests, poisonings, and at least one ambush interview, but nothing prepared it for Anita Dupree clearing her throat. She announced she was ready to get back in the studio, and her fellow Articulettes, Tracy Tyler and Sharon Winger, demanded a demonstration before signing off on anything. The two had arrived pleasantly tipsy, courtesy of the limo Anita sent to fetch them, which was either hospitality or a bribe with a minibar.

Before the music, there was gossip. They covered the free fall of Martin Richardson’s approval rating, then Sharon’s new boo, MG, and the sexual healing he supplied, a topic Sharon treated as a public service announcement.

Then came the scales, and they were rough. Sharon, a friend to the end, announced that a salmon she once ate had shown better ones. Round two improved enough that the others accused Anita of sandbagging for years, and all three belted Amazing Grace, the soap opera method of calling a truce.

Anita decided it was time to call Devon, adding that a “correction session” with Leslie Thomas had settled her part in the process. Hands were clasped, the Articulettes were declared back in business, and Tracy wept over Barbara, Leslie’s late mother, finally getting her recognition. They passed around a photo of themselves with their kids, toasted the adversity they had survived, and hugged it out. When Vernon Dupree strolled in, his wife informed him she was full of hope. He had no idea he was about to live with scales.

Do you think Anita’s comeback hits the right note, or will the Articulettes need a better warm-up? Email us your take at amber@soapoperamagazine.com, we want to hear it.

Martin Doubts His Own Slogan

Martin ran on the phrase “Truth always,” which made his crisis of conscience at the club especially cruel. He summoned Shonda to join him and Vernon and admitted the race looked grim. Vernon told him to brace himself, but Martin confessed he wasn’t sure he deserved to win after years of fudging the truth, and he worried about dragging his grandfather’s name down with him.

Vernon dismissed that as nonsense, insisted empathy was Martin’s superpower, and argued that his doubts only proved how good he was. His prescription was a pat on the back, delivered to himself. When Shonda arrived, Martin announced his decision: forums, to reach voters. She upgraded the idea to a livestream and promised wingback chairs, because nobody in Beyond the Gates has ever lost an election while sitting in a wingback.

Naomi and Jacob Hit a Wall

Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne arrived at Uptown looking ready to deliver a eulogy, and Chelsea Hamilton and Kat Richardson braced for it. Her marriage to Jacob Hawthorne was on the brink, she said. Kat asked whether it was Battleship-level bad. It was. Jacob had been unable to focus on a romcom because Smitty’s case kept crashing the plot, he wasn’t sure Smitty was totally innocent, and he resented her, too.

The cousins were appalled. Naomi called it her marriage’s darkest hour, and once she left, Chelsea and Kat decided Jacob had needed to vent and that the real cure for Dupree drama was a party. Nothing heals a crisis like catering.

At Orphey Gene’s, June Hughes swooned over the scent of Izaiah Hawthorne, until the temperature dropped the moment Jacob walked in. He unloaded about the family friction since arresting Smitty, reminded his brother of the oath he had to uphold, and admitted he had watched Smitty stretch the law chasing stories. He had also blindsided himself by hauling up issues he thought were buried, like the kids and Naomi’s test results.

Izaiah, a full year into his romance with Eva Thomas, wasn’t shocked his brother had been sitting on his feelings. Jacob was impressed to hear him say “coping mechanisms” out loud, and Izaiah credited his progress to learning to be reactive, not reactionary. Growth looks good on him, even with the vocabulary.

Smitty Packs for Mexico

Samantha Richardson asked Smitty to help stitch up her Hello Kitty and Betty Boop hybrid costume, then recited everything else she needed from him before a prison sentence could interfere with her eventual wedding. He swore prison was unlikely. She’d done the research and begged to differ. Smitty promised he was innocent and wasn’t about to stop fighting, then asked her to swear she’d live her best life whatever happened. She cried that she’d never be okay with losing him. Diagnosing a “life planning spiral,” he sent her out for refreshments.

Naomi turned up with news: Vernon’s FBI contacts had located Max’s cousin in Mexico, and finding Max might prove the video fake. Mexico being enormous, she’d hired a PI and ordered Smitty to stay put. The moment she left, he started packing. When Martin walked in, Smitty announced his destination, and Martin feared his husband was running. Smitty insisted he was searching, and promised he’d be fine.

Later, Samantha unloaded on June that nobody understood losing someone you love. June assumed Samantha meant her own departure and promised to always be there.

Leslie Wants Grandbabies

Leslie showed up at Eva’s with low-fat cookies and a plan for an anniversary party at the club. Eva called it tacky, given that the club was where the Thomas women had detonated Ted Richardson and Nicole Dupree Richardson’s marriage. Leslie wondered aloud whether Nicole was a know-it-all or a chicken cutlet, and sniffed that Shanice Johnson might be “remotely interesting” but nowhere near as fascinating as she was.

Eva suggested a little regret might be in order. Leslie had lost the map to regret years ago and credited her methods with getting her daughter exactly where she wanted her. The Thomas women were thriving, and they joined hands to prove it. When Izaiah arrived, Leslie skipped out, leaving a note requesting grandbabies, and the couple discussed forever without flinching.

Leslie then tracked Jacob to Orphey Gene’s, greeted “baby boy blunder” with the news that Smitty was headed for the clink, and watched him walk out.

Fairmont Crest Takes No Days Off

Anita got her comeback started with brutal notes and a hymn, which in Fairmont Crest counts as a calm afternoon. The same could not be said for Martin’s conscience, Naomi and Jacob’s marriage, or Smitty’s travel plans, none of which Samantha handled gracefully, while Leslie used the occasion to request grandbabies.
